About
Created as the perfect house in the perfect setting, Berrington has many secrets to uncover. Here in one of Henry Holland’s first houses, you can explore the family rooms and walk in the servants’ footsteps down the back stairs, moving around the house unseen by the family and guests. You will find out what happened to William Kemp, LordCawley’s butler, and discover the anguish of a grieving mother during the First World War. Alternatively why not join a below-stairs tour to see if you would have liked being a servant at Berrington?

This is worth a visit, very interesting house, the National Trust volunteers are very helpful, there is plenty to see as well. We had lunch there and it was good value for money. The garden is also very interesting.

Berrington Hall is a country house located about 3 miles north of Leominster, Herefordshire, England. During the 20th century it was the seat of the Cawley family. It is a neoclassical country house building that Henry Holland designed in 1778-81 for Thomas Harley. We visited on the penultimate day of October in 2020 with a few brief interludes of sunshine between the rain. It was mostly cold and wet but we found the interior of the house a fascinating refuge. We did manage to spend a little while in the gardens and although not spectacular at this time of the year we managed to thoroughly enjoy them.

Grounds easy to assess, walled garden interesting. The house was a pocket sized stately home. The display of dress was interesting. The staff very polite and informative. We popped to the cafe for tea and cake. Lovely to see a teapot that had enough for seconds. Thank you.

A week in the area, and taking a day off from hill waking, we elected to visit Berrington hall
Such a worthwhile visit. Although this is not the time of year for gardens to appear glorious, they were nevertheless interesting, and were busily being worked on.
There's still much restoration going on to the oldest parts of the grounds, and the walks around the grounds and lake are full of interest.
The house itself was really interesting and there was a most informative exhibition of ladies undergarments from the 16th Century (or in some instances the lack of under garments!)
Staff were very well informed and helpful. The rooms are well informed with information boards and booklets.
The Cafe (NT) was predictably good and staffed by cheerful young people.
A thoroughly good day ot.

Being members of the National Trust we try to visit as many of the properties as we can.
Berrington Hall is lovely and the story of the dress told throughout the building is just beautiful.
The cafe offered a nice selection for lunch.
Definitely worth a visit

Friendly and informative stewards enhanced our visit. A good insight into Georgian life of the upper classes. Good walks in the parkland although the paths around the lake are currently closed

We went here after a disappointing visit to Croft Castle 15 minutes away. This was far better. Lots to see in the house, which is different from a lot of the standard NT houses. The grounds are extensive, some more formal areas, and some just parkland. It's a great place to take a dog, and there's seating in various places to take a picnic. The walled garden is now past it best, but 3-4 weeks ago would have been beautiful. Café was good, and we enjoyed the obligatory scone! One thing to note is that there are several stairs down into the cafe, and in order to sit outside, I had to carry a tray back up the steps. I suspect if you struggled, a member of staff would assist. There is seating inside as well.
Quite a lot of steps inside the house, which again may be an issue for some, but once upstairs, it's all very accessible.
Guides inside were enthusiastic, but not intrusive, and all seemed very knowledgeable. Definitely worth a visit.

Visited Sunday 4th September 2022. usual winding narrow lanes to find it. Parked OK. Wasnt far to the reception and the staff there were very friendly and helpful. As usual we headed for the tearooms and had drinks and a scone, young chap serving was very friendly. To the hall where we were met by a lady who gave us lots of info about the house and a route round which was freeflow. The visit was good and not like other places which we liked. . The grounds looked really nice but we didnt venture around. Great views from the halls rooms. We are NT members

From the outside Berrington Hall resembles an inhospitable, dreary, dismal lump of uninispiring architecture that has been randomly dropped into the otherwise pristine Herefordshire countryside and left to rot and sour in a permanent state of being unloved and forgotten about.
It's exteriors are certainly off-putting and you'd feel extreme reluctance to enter its interiors for fear of them being even worse.

But once inside, despite some austerity in the furnishings and overall look, the hall opens up and invites you warmly into its history and tells the stories of the Harley and the Cawley familes, the two main occupying dynasties of the hall over its history, very well and with detail, especially through the exhibits in the dress exhibition.
