St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

Very helpful staff with wheelchair assistance. Prayerful setting. First English martyr. We often try to get to the Catholic mass on a Friday at noon. The cathedral is ecumenical and has services for Lutheran and Orthodox worshippers.

Certainly an unusual cathedral with a very interesting history, The architecture is unique too a real mixture of all kinds of styles, built/rebuilt over several hundreds of years, a thought provoking shrine to Christianity....If You go on a Sunday a third of the church is not accessible during the service which ends at 12.30 pm. Unfortunately I didn't have the... More

Well worth a good look around to find out about the "Abbey's" history, about St. Alban and the persecution of early Christians by the Romans.

A very accessible cathedral with a real mishmash of architectural styles. It looks as though some of the building material was re-used from older buildings - possibly roman. One side of the cathedral is a real architectural puzzle - great fun. Personally I didn't like the newer part of the cathedral as it didn't take the older building into consideration... More

I walked around the outside of the cathedral, it is stunning to look at. I will visit the inside later this year.

Walked around the Cathedral/Abbey when visiting St Albans, they were rehearsing an evensong from a visiting choir and it sounded lovely. I had to be quick sadly, but would love to go back and spend a little more time as it looks like a lovely place to be and visit.

We enjoyed a tour with a blue badge guide which I think is best as there are so many hidden gems and great stories. The cathedral has so much history, art and architecture. The grounds are lovely, especially on a nice day. We also had afternoon tea which was great. St Albans is a lovely place to visit and we... More

You can't visit St.Albans without visiting this amazing Cathedral. Since I was six years of age, and I'm not religious, I always visit this most amazing place. I was born here in St.Albans, although never really lived here, so the church and the city have a special drawer, it means a lot to me. Surround by wonderful gardens and just... More
