Owned and operated by Ambassdor Theatre Group (ATG) the Phoenix was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and Bertie Crewe. It opened in 1930 with the premiere of Noel Coward's Private Lives starring the author, Gertrude Lawrence and Laurence Olivier.

Many star actors have appeared at the theatre including Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, John Gielgud, Dustin Hoffman, Derek Jacobi, Kenneth Branagh and Stephen Fry.

More recently the theatre has presented a number of successful musicals including, between 1991 and 2012, Willy Russell's Blood Brothers which became the theatre's longest-running show and was seen by over 5 million people.

The theatre is now home to the award-winning Broadway musical Once.

This is the best show I have ever seen, it's sad and funny, I don't think I have laughed so much is ages and had tears in my eyes at the same time. It made me proud to be a Yorkshire girl. It's definitely a must see show, hope it comes back up north so I can go see it... More

My mum and I went to this and had a wonderful evening. The cast got a standing ovation at the end- well- deserved. If you don't know the story be prepared for some nudity towards the end. All very tasteful- hats off to the WI members in the cast- very brave!!! The music is very catchy and the words make... More

I have never left a review for anything before but felt I must for this. What a brilliant show. Funny, sad, uplifting and a really wonderful musical score with lyrics that touches everyday ordinary life so well. I could see it again straight away! In my opinion, better than the film. A well deserved standing ovation from the whole audience... More

We thoroughly enjoyed The Girls and the cast harmonised beautifully throughout and clearly had a great time themselves with a little improvisation! No particularly memorable songs but a really good show and comfortable seats in dress circle. Take some spare change for Cancer Research which the leading ladies collect at the end of the show in the foyer! Only negative... More

I went with my wife and an elderly female friend and when I got to the theatre I noticed that I was one of only a handful of men attending this performance. That being said I would like to say here and now that it is not a women only show in fact I loved it thinking it is one... More

I visited the Phoenix Theatre to watch 'The Girls' the new musical written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow. I have never laughed and cried so many times in a musical. I applaud each and everyone of the cast for delivering such a fabulous performance - the standing ovation was well deserved - Bravo!
