Unusual and well worth a visit

Interesting interior with old fashioned box pews. No entrance charge, but nice to leave a donation. Views from churchyard stunning!

weather you are visiting to take in the views and the Church it is a must. We attended the Christmas day service, it was lovely, and the now unusual use of the book of common prayer. the box pews give you a sense of going back in time. A beautiful church, worth attending a service to get the most from... More

I have seen the inside of many an old church, but nothing prepared me for what I was to see inside St Mary's church. From pews to hire and a 3 tier pulpit, that's in addition to ancient stone fonts and Anglo Saxon hand carved stone coffins. Worth the climb of the 199 steps and you have the views as... More

This is a church with stunning views in an amazing location. It is worth a visit just to study the views from outside but once in, well, a very quirky inside which is so quaint and lovely. The way the seating and pews are arranged is so unusual and this is "one on its own". I would certainly recommend a... More

This is well worth a visit. A look back in time and monumental historic stones. If you ever want to feel the past here you can. To get to the town you descend the 199 steps which, if you carefully look whilst climbing up, are numbered on the left side in Roman numerals.

This church is well worth climbing up the 199 steps to get to! It's perched on the windswept cliff top and the view over Whitby and the sea is incredible. It has a three tier pulpit right in the middle of the church but what split it for me was the horrible 'atmospheric' music that was playing in the background.... More

Climbed the 199 steps which warmed us up on this cold, damp Wednesday 18th January morning. The view was outstanding even on a miserable day. Inside the church we had the most warming of welcomes. I don't know the ladies name but she was most helpful and chatty. The church is steeped in history, with original box pews and the... More

The 199 Steps were not half as bad as expected. The view from the top incredible even though the Abbey wasn't yet open it really was worth the visit. The church was founded in 657 and whilst it has been destroyed and rebuilt over the years the atmosphere inside is truly amazing. The centuries old pews, the stone walls, the... More

St Marys has a great vantage point on the cliff at the top of 199 steps from Whitby and by the Abbey. Despite it's neighbour, this church shouldn't be overlooked for the larger, gothic ruin next to it, as the interior is actually fascinating. A unique three tier pulpit, complete with ear trumpets, and sectioned off, lockable, 'family pews' -... More
