After walking up the 199 steps you forget how tired you are, as you see the imposing Abbey at the top. Excellent value for money and a must see if you've never visited before. The shop and cafe offer a wide range of products.

This has been on my bucket list, and I wasn't disappointed. The view from the Abbey is stunning. Being on the headland it can get a tad windy. If you don't fancy going up the 199 steps to get there, there is a car park....More

Very imposing ruins on the headland, with the church and ancient dark headstones in front of it. Well worth the climb up the 199 steps, even more dramatic when the thunder and lightning began halfway up. The staff are friendly and informative, and the visitor...More

Whitby Abbey is a good place to visit especially if you are English Heretidge members. You can walk around with a recording telling you all about it. It now has a large wall all the way round and I am sure that was not there...More

The day was freezing which impacted on the enjoyment of visiting the Abbey. It was however a great site sitting on the headland. We could only stay outside for a short time as the wind was gusting off the North Sea. Brrrrrr

Be wary of timings and school trips, we went on a Monday afternoon at around 2pm and there seemed to be two large groups of school children there at the same time. Admission allows for all day entry and re-entry. Obviously being a member of...More

What a great abbey, beautiful views, lovely grounds and very friendly staff. We visited here when we spent a couple of days in Whitby. There were events only for the younger ones too, so we took advantage of the dressing up clothes, great fun. Decided...More

What a wonderful surprise after climbing the 199 steps to the top (not as hard as it would appear) a lovely old abbey reasonably priced and audio available if needed. Added to this a very reasonably priced tea room.

Definitely a must see when your in Whitby, walk the 199 steps to get most of the expirience, museum is very good, very interesting, dogs are very welcome. The free audio tour is very good puts you right there like going back in time

Yes as the steps are outside of the Abbey walls, they link the town with the abbey

Yes not only by the ruins but inside the visitor centre as well. Whitby is a wonderful place to take dogs, not only the pubs but also many of the coffee shops and restaurants allow them in.
