FREE FUN IN YORK... aka The Fabulous York Cat Trail provides both visitors and locals with the opportunity to find and photo the numerous statues of cats which are on York's old buildings. These were put there to frighten away rats and mice. The statues were also thought to ward off wandering evil spirits and to bestow good luck and good health on people. Enjoy the trail... it's FREE! You are warmly invited to download it from our website, or to pick it up from our Shambles based shop

We downloaded and printed the map at home. We didn't follow it exactly, but the kids enjoyed looking for some of the cats. Good to keep the kids entertained and not moan while walking around and seeing York!

We read about the cat trail while researching activities in York: statues of cats on buildings. Two maps are available, that are not identical. We used them both to make sure we were missing none. The maps are laid out like a treasure hunt with...More

Really enjoyed the walk, which we did in two stages. Liked the fact that went to areas would not have normally gone to. It was a challenge as not all immediately obvious to find which made more interesting. Highly recommend to all, not just cat...More

The trail must be brilliant as even my 17 year old son enjoyed looking for the cats and when we couldn't find one would jot let us move on to the next one until we found it. I also like the idea of the kitten...More

Was an added bonus to find the cat trail. Be aware there are two leaflets available and some are difficult to spot. But even with this it was something free and fun to do

We had fun looking for a few cats, but needed the help of the internet for some of them. The directions and map in the pamphlet could use some revision to add a bit more accuracy and detail. With that, it might be even more...More

Stumbled upon this after we saw a leaflet at the Tourist Info Office. Fun way to walk around the city, looking up at the buildings to find them all - we did! Took us to areas we would otherwise not bother with - so good...More

We did this on a bank holiday Monday and it was great. It took us about 2 hours without stopping. We got the map which was easy enough to follow. There was only 1 or 2 cats we couldn't find. We'll definitely do this again...More

I think it largely depends on the number and ages of the children you're with, and how busy York is. You can easily just do some of the clues, we spent a good 30 minutes following the trail, did some shopping and found... More

Thank you for the kind comment. As one of the people who put the original tour together over ten years ago, it's really lovely to see that the tour and Cats in York website lives on after having to move away from York and... More
