Glad we didn't plan on spending long here. Perhaps, as Londoners, we are spoilt regarding museums, and they were in process of updating the Viking stuff, but there is little here to interest us. Best bit was to learn about 'Strata' Smith the "father of geology".

A small but informative museum of Roman and Viking artefacts. There is also a section on natural history with fossilised remains of dinosaurs. The surrounding gardens are very pleasant.

Interesting with a lot of good artefacts, felt that some areas didn't enhance the visit i.e. the library area as a lot of the exhibits appeared to be about the Romans. This may have been because after 3 days we were becoming a little hisory overloaded. The gardens around the museum are spectacular and on the beautiful day that we... More

Nice museum with good exhibits (it is not a large collection but still good). The grounds and ruins are fabulous. Well worth the entrance fee. Note: a new exhibit is opening, so expect it to be even better. Overall, great deal, good price, and good historical information. Staff are nice and helpful.

If you are looking to know a lot more about the history of York and generally England then I will definitely recommend. The museum has three floors with plenty of material to see. I would highly recommend for tourists that want to learn a little bit extra about York.

A large museum with loads to look at! There's lost of interesting displays detailing the history of the area. It was a good price to get in and we had a good afternoon. There is also a gift shop.

Enjoyed visit. Some interesting things to see & read about. It was a shame the basement level was closed, but it was half price on the day we went.

If you enjoy delving into the history of cities like York then museums like these are good points of reference. Laid out over 3 floors the museum give a good insight into the past and identifies the tribes who had a hand in the changes that helped shape the city.

On arrival, I was recognised by a volunteer who had been at another museum I had visited on the previous day. It was explained that one of the galleries was closed while a new exhibition was put in place and so it was half price. I found items on display fascinating (mostly, I don't do dead animals), but the layout... More
