- captaincookYorkshireSkipton, United Kingdom135 contributionsBrilliant visit - not to be missedBeen visiting York for day trips and overnights for 25+ years and never been to Merchants Hall before - it was amazing and educational. Toilets and cafe and shop all superb. As English Heritage members it was half price admission but even full price it’s great value for money. Staff all around were super. Cafe had a lovely range of food made fresh and delicious. They were so accommodating of our very hungry baby!! We will be back with our year ticketVisited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 April 2023
- Francesca HCamborne, United Kingdom340 contributionsStunning building and a lovely cafeThis building is stunning to look around. There is plenty of information about the history. The hall upstairs is breathtaking with its bowed floors. We even had a bit of fun tying on hats and posing in the picture frame. Most importantly it has excellent disabled access including a lift which meant I could have a good look around.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 August 2023

Close to York Dungeons- this building is however not visited as much as it should be. It has a lovely cafe downstairs, but it's upstairs that takes your breath away ! Make time to visit this beautiful historical building- you won't regret it.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2023

Just around the corner from the crowds and commercialism of the Shambles it was a pleasure to visit the calm and dignity of the historic Merchant Adventurers. A very reasonable £7 entrance fee. The coffee shop is free to visit and looked good though we didn’t stop. Not so much for kids but couples will enjoy.

Super coffee and cake in an historic setting. The Bakewell tart was moist and wonderful. Recommend. The setting is fascinating with huge oak beams above and toilets which are beautifully decorated.

I enjoyed my visit! The admission fee is cheap and the audio guide teaches a lot. Definitely do the audio guide, otherwise your visit will be 10 minutes long.

A lovely bit of history tucked away off Fossgate although the main entrance is more obvious. A great historic building which is well maintained. It looked to me that the locals were using the café which is accessible without buying and entrance ticket. It was not on our planned places to visit in York but we are glad that we did. I would recommend this to anyone who like historic buildings.

A hidden gem, with informative signage. To end up, the cafe was an island of peace in the middle of a busy city.

The property does not take long to see and appreciate. It is worth it just to see the Great Hall. An amazing space.

I can only speak for the café, but the hot chocolate was divine and the marshmallows melted in my mouth. The staff was friendly and patient. Nothing to complain about on that end

This was a nice place to start my day off. I loved seeing the old chapel and the flags of the different merchants but it was extremely small!

Due to the current situation do you have to book to visit the hall or can you pay upon arrival?

David,
The entry fee is £6,or £5 if,like me you're over 60. The opening time is 10am until 4pm(occasionally 3.30pm),and I wouldn't have thought that you'd need to book,we didn't. It takes a couple of hours to see it all and I'd highly recommend the cafe next door called The Hairy Fig.
