The remains of York's Norman House, a Grade I Listed building, stand in a secluded courtyard which can be accessed through a door in an archway which leads to a passageway between numbers 50 and 52 Stonegate. There is a wall plaque which you can read giving information about the history of York's oldest surviving building and listing the architectural... More

This small courtyard has the oldest extant house walls in York and is located in a snickleway off Stonegate. The location of this ruin is unfortunately at the back of a community church that helps the homeless, the alcoholics and drug addicts of York - of which there are plenty, sadly. I wouldn't recommend coming here when it's dark or the sun is setting but during the day is fine, though be prepared to see quite a few of... More

Publically open Ruins are usually the remains of great abbey's or castles etc. The Norman house off hidden off Stonegate shares it's access with a church hall consits of fragments of two wals of the house, including substantial remains of a window and fireplace all supported within the walls of the surrounding buildings. This is a peacefull spot within yards... More
