Rang before to check they could fit the three of us in - all seated within half an hour. Only seemed to be beef for the roast option - but no bad thing. Big servings with two yorkies, roasties, mash, carrots, red cabbage, peas and generous amount of beef. Did what is was meant to do. Bar staff reminded me... More

My partner and I visited here for Sunday lunch on 18/12/16. The bar itself wasn't exactly busy and the (I'm assuming) owners of the pub were making drinks at a leisurely pace. After 20 minutes of standing and waiting, we decided to leave. As we were leaving we were finally greeted by the lady behind the bar, only for her... More

I visited The Black Swan on a day out around York with my Mum in November 2016. We visited a tonne of pubs & bars across York throughout the day and whilst most were fantastic, the Black Swan was our favourite. The pub has a roaring open fire that we managed to get seats right next to. If you’re looking... More

If you are looking for a traditional English pub when in York, I would recommend trying The Black Swan. The food was excellent, the portions huge, and the price reasonable. We had a group of 13 and everyone was very pleased with their food. The pub is full of character, and we are told ghosts, although we saw none! A... More

Pub with real character, lovely Landlady and fantastic Ploughman's - would definitely recommend a visit and a pint of their Ale. Its just outside of the centre but easily accessible and well worth the trouble.

First up, I want to praise the two ladies who served us today, in the bar and kitchen. We asked for a Ploughmans with no foods that are unsuitable for my pregnant wife - and they gave us that with congratulations and a smile. This is a lovely friendly pub - I always bring visitors to York here, not just... More

This old pub has lots of character and a good varied beer cellar. It is steeped in history and the stairs to the upper floor list at a severe angle at the bottom which can be quite disconcerting but I rather fancy that it becomes less so the more libations you have. Regular music nights/events are also held on the... More

We were on our way home after dinner our last night in Yorkhwhen another American came out of the Black Swan and told us we needed to go in and listen to the music. Turned out it was Folk Weekend and the pub had music playing in three rooms. So we settled in with a pint and just enjoyed, moving... More

Went to experience the atmosphere, ghosts etc, didn't see any lol. However, great beer, good friendly service and worth the trip for the food alone. Superb Yorkshire pud.
