78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton.

Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions.

78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

Our guide was exceptional and really made the 90 minute tour of what is just a small terraced house an interesting and instructive visit. The restaurant also did well to serve us a quick snack, despite not having booked, before the tour started.

An Afternoon tea was purchased for a friend and me for my birthday. What a wonderful place? Apart from gorgeous building, well laid out informative boards, tours and a lovely little shop, art gallery etc., Made our way to the Dining area which was designed to give the feel of a cottage tea rooms. Our hostess was very pleasant and... More

The tour guide was excellent with a lot of knowledge and a sense of humour. I wasn't sure what to expect before my visit, but was so impressed with each and every room. Well worth a visit, particularly if you are interested in how home interiors have changed over the last 100 years.

Very knowledgeable guide who gave in depth information. The house is restored to a high and original standard. It is clean and well kept. The only down side was the tea rooms were closed off for a private function while the house was still open to visitors.

Surprising and amazing- not what you expect behind the unassuming entrance! Fascinating and beautiful. Lovely gift shop and had the most amazing afternoon tea- eat after your tour, you can't move after all those gorgeous cakes!

It's not often that you get the opportunity to visit an urban house that contains the iconic design workings of Rennie Macintosh, and when you find out it was a commission from the world renowned Northampton engineer and toy maker Wenham Joseph Bassett-Loake you just have to go visit. Far too much detail to cover in a simple review on... More

Have visited Northampton many times over many years but this was my first visit to 78 Derngate, and arrived just in time to join a guided tour. It began with a 10 minute film briefly telling the history and then a small group of us were shown round the various rooms ( you are required to wear plastic covers over... More
