Chester's is one of the best tourist attractions on Hadrian's Wall. Parking is £3 but you get that back off the price of admission. The staff in the shop were friendly- but please, English Heritage, stop peddling the membership so hard. I'm happy to listen to a line- but the reality is I go to maybe 3 sites a year... More

Brought a client with progressed cancer for a day out to a site we are both familiar with who requires a wheelchair. I rang in advance and spoke to an authoritative and knowledgeable chap, nick who's customer service was exemplary going beyond the simple programmed responses and suggesting we use their newly acquired wheelchair on site instead of needing to... We found this rather bleak and less inspiring than Vindolanda. The entrance is expensive for self guided visitors.

Chesters roman fort includes a large number of old roman ruins and some small bits of the Wall. There is plenty of information on the site. The site includes a coffe shop and teh Clayton museum that has lots of roman artifacts and information on John Clayton who rescued much of Hadrian's Wall and associated forts and mile castles etc.... I enjoyed my experience at Chesters Fort, It opened my eyes as to how the day to day running of the fort went on. The ruins are well preserved and looked after and the information easy to understand. There is a museum on site with plenty of artifacts and relics very interesting worth a visit.

We called in today and really enjoyed our time wandering around, there are plenty of notice boards about to explain the layout. Fascinating facts and an interesting layout, the cafe was a nice addition on a hot sunny day as well. We always enjoy English Heritage sites as most will allow dogs on leads, a must for us!

The whole site is lot bigger than we expected & there is lot to see. It is set in an absolutely beautiful spot next to the River Tyne. We particularly liked the ruined remains of the old Roman Bath house, which we simply outstanding. There was also sufficient information available around the site, to give you a good impression of... Interesting visit and remains. Good parking. I think this site is more for the enthusiast than amateur visitor. Interesting and does give some insights into the life and living conditions of our roman occupiers. On site cafe for coffee and a snack. Lovely views around about.

Chesters Roman Fort is well worth a visit, whether you know much about Roman legionary life or not (you can buy a guide book, if you wish) and is situated right next to the River North Tyne, with views of the remains of Hadrian's Wall. There is also a small informative museum on site and a cafe (not the cheapest).... More
