A magnificent 17th century ducal mansion built on the site of the original Medieval Castle. The Castle has a turbulent past, linked to kings and conquerors and still has a maze of original caves hidden beneath its imposing walls. Now the building houses a Museum & Art Gallery, offering visitors an opportunity to see the best regional, national and international art in the regularly changing exhibition galleries. Plus the permanent exhibitions showcase costume and textiles, silverware, glass and a glimpse into Nottingham's history.

We were aware that there is practically no castle left on the site, but wanted to visit to see the caves and see the mansion that is now used as an art gallery. The admission, £20 for the four of us, seemed reasonable, but I was rather surprised to then find that we needed to pay another £20 for the... More

Good points - the grounds are nice, and the fine art in the two galleries is worth seeing. The paintings are very poorly laid out, with little in the way of explanation of what or who you are looking at. However, that takes up an hour maximum and the rest is not worth it. The guide you are given on... More

I came here on a date to have a picnic and see the galleries. It was a weekday afternoon and quiet despite it being half term. The grounds looked great even in autumn as we ate our lunch and were very sheltered. Views of the locale were stunning but be sure to wrap up as it is very exposed. I... More

Well it was the local Duke but Robin Hood features in the very good interactive child-friendly exhibits. Good views, shop and phot ops. A panoramic map all round would be useful. Interesting artworks!

We had a lovely morning walking around the castle museum which was quite quiet. We found the art in the long hall very interesting and there was a 'modern' art display by local artists that was certainly different. We were unable to visit the caves but hope to see them again on another visit to Nottingham. Would recommend a visit.

Really disappointed with our trip to Nottingham castle- heavy price to get in the did not include the 'cave' tour. No proper history of Nottingham, just a building with random pieces in that don't really tie up. Cafe is pricey too.

Decided to visit some of the history in the town but was quite underwhelmed. The price was high for what it was and the museum was quite basic and unappealing. The gallery wasn't too bad though

This is not really a castle but does have some original features. It's more of a grand manor house. However it's perfect for traditional art, culture and history and was exceptionally interesting. Spent a good few hours enjoying the gardens, caves and art. Great robin hood exhibition. Definitely a go to place learn about the city and ancient past

Be prepared for climbing up steep inclines to get to and get around this fascinating piece of history. That said, health and energy holding out this is a delightful place to visit to find out about local history and the stories about a certain infamous person from English history! Many displays and information centres tell the story of local history... More
