About
Oxford Castle & Prison explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed characters, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

Good Attraction, but age restriction unnecessary.

Appreciated the live tour guide Becca (a rarity these days) as she was good storyteller and did a good job keeping the kids engaged on the tour.

The big drawback was the age limit to climb the tower. We've brought our kids to plenty of similarly challenging staircases (Newcastle Castle, Tower of London, Dover Castle and more), and they've been fine. The attraction should let parents decide if their kids can handle it.

Rebecca was a superb tour guide. Funny, insightful and a real natural. Kids loved it.Even the teenager was fully engaged and not trying to sneak onto his phone.

Brilliant Historical Attraction
Oct 2021 • Family
The whole experience was absolutely brilliant with tour guide Rebecca being engaging and full of information. The access for my dad in a wheelchair was great as they couldn’t be more helpful in attending to the lift.

Highly recommend as you learn a lot about the history of such a class city!

Capture the Castle

My husband insisted we visit the Castle and Prison. I grudgingly went along fearing it would be very Ye Olde tourist trap.
Did I ever eat Humble Pie.

Very interesting history from 1066 to present..ideas of punishment and reform. Some famous and infamous prisoners spent their last days there. An excellent video, if you , like I, are afraid of heights and don’t wish to climb up to the tower. Narrow steps, 101 of them, a spiral..

Natalia, our guide, cast a spell over all of us with her dramatic and engaging tale of the place.

Well worth it..

A look back into Oxfords history
Oct 2021 • Couples
It's part of the Saxon Castle which developed into a prison that ran until 1996. Steeped in history the displays are good but the tour was made by the guide Natalia. Her knowledge of the history of both the castle and prison as well as the city itself was impressive.

Spiral staircase

Good guide, Jess, very knowledgeable and friendly, steps could cause a problem if you aren’t able to climb them, spiral staircase, but you are given the option to stay on lower ground,

A LITTLE BUT IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Oct 2021 • Couples
Short but intense visit. It's 1 hour of interesting and full of curious facts about the castle and prison history. David and Helena (hope is spelled riglt😅) and really everyone working at the castle, have been very friendly and entertaining. This experience is something that you wouldn't miss (even if you aren't that passionate about history) because the immersive experience will make you feel like how it was to live in those ancient days as you walk in the dark of the crypt and inside the cells of the prisons and hear the stories that survived until today.

Great way to spend a few hours in Oxford
Oct 2021
Guide was very engaging and informative, and the tour was great fun. Would be good for a variety of ages and was the ideal length of time (50 minutes). A fun activity in an often overlooked attraction of Oxford. Would highly recommend.
