Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed character guides, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

We did groan a bit when we found out it was guided tours only but it was necessary as the castle does have some steep windy stairs and it would be unsafe to let people loose. Also the actors etc was something we thought would be cringey but actually the young guide won us over and was both funny and... More

We had a young guy dressed as a criminal who once used the name 'Dumas' to escape. He was brilliant and full of knowledge. What really impressed us was the stories and information that we didn't already know. As so many historical sites often repeat various versions of the same well known stories. Left the tour feeling as though we... More

Thanks for a great morning. The tour guide was great and had brilliant knowledge of the history of the castle. We ended our morning at the castle cafe and had a lovely sandwich and hot drink.

We opted for the historical character guided tour! Very informative although the delivery by the young 'criminal' was somewhat nervy and awkward. Good tour and gift shop.

This is the spot where the river was first forded for the passage of oxen and therefore the very origin of Oxford. The tour explains the history most entertainingly and also provides an opportunity to climb the tower and view the 'dreaming spires'.

All parts of the castle and prison were open and we had an excellent tour guide. Cost of visiting historical monuments in the UK can be expensive but this was reasonable £9 and made better by the very interactive guide.

Visited during a trip to oxford. Taken around by Daniel Harris who was friendly, engaging and taught us lots of history. We climbed the tower to the top, stopping on 2 floors along the way where Daniel engaged us in various interesting (historical) tales. There is a lovely view from the top of oxford's spires. You then climb back down to... More

My friend and I try to meet up a few times a year with our boys now aged 14, 14 and 10. We weren't expecting too much but our visit was great. Accompanied by our knowledgeable tour guide Matilda we explored history from medieval times through civil war, victorian era to present day. Pumpkin carving was thrown in and rather... More

Oxford Castle -Unlocked was definitely on our itinerary of things to do whilst on a Long Weekend stay in Oxford. My wife and I visited on Friday 21st October and were "privileged" to have Daniel Harris, the original prison governor, as our own personal guide through the ages...a totally fascinating and very professional performance-you could easily be forgiven for believing...
