I came to this memorial today as an American service member wearing my dress uniform to pay my respects to a little known WW2 story of heroism in Sheffield. This is a memorial stone to the crew of a B17 Flying fortress. It was hit over Germany in 1944 and the crew only got this far back to their airbase. It is suggested that they put it down in the park to avoid hitting the nearby houses. Each year there is a service to commemorate them, which is held... More
