About
Ludlow Castle is an unusually complete range of medieval buildings with a varied history evident within its walls. It is host to a number of events year-round. Castle House was one of the last grand mansions built in Ludlow. Restored in 2006 it provides a range of Independent shops, Chapter 66 restaurant-café with an idyllic outside terrace during the summer months; function rooms that are available for weddings and events, and 3 self catering apartments which are available for 3, 4 and 7 night stays.

Really enjoyed spending a couple of hours exploring the castle. The turrets were a bit of a mission to get up and down, with the stairs incredibly steep and winding but well worth the effort if you’re able to as the views are great! We visited on a drizzly Monday just after half term and almost had the place to ourselves which made it very enjoyable. The rain mostly held off and we got some sun but if it’s a really rainy day, I’d recommend waterproofs and umbrellas and a lot of it is out in the open and not under cover. There are lots of plaques around giving some context and interesting facts about the history of different parts of the building. It’s well worth the £9 entry fee and an enjoyable experience for history buffs and casual visitors alike.

If, like me, you’re a Yorkist nut, you don’t need a reason to visit this amazing castle. But it’s taken me 57 years so maybe you also need a nudge. Immersed in history this castle really delivers. The town itself is worth visiting. In many ways we should be grateful to William the Conqueror for giving us these types of castles in strategic places. Here you get plenty of information boards, 50p visitor guides for those with casual interest and £3 guides which really get into the detail. Richard III and his mum were left here while his Dad legged it through the west door into Wales to eventually return and secure the throne for his son, Edward. Arthur, first son of Henry VII died here and his widow Catherine of Aragon was married off to Henry VIII who wouldn’t have been king if Arthur hadn’t died at Ludlow! You can stand in his bedroom! So much to see and feel. Brilliant place. Enjoy.

The guided tour with the archeaologist was brilliant. If you think archaeologists sound boring, you couldn't be more wrong. Leon Bracelin is a live wire. He explained the different building phases and uses of the castle buildings in an engaging way.

Amazing fortress that dominates the area, and the small town that sits on the approaches to the castle. The building shouts out a message of prestiage and dominance of the local C12th population. Make now mistake this is a powerhouse in what was and inmany aspects is still a very rural backwater area - all be it one that has some of the most charming landscapes.
The buildings ooze history and intruige- it is a great place for young minds to play, and great views to match.

Ludlow Castle is an amazing ancient monument steeped in history which goes back to the Norman Conquest. It has seen many changes and had many famous occupants over the centuries. We were lucky enough to join one of the tours led by Leon Bracelin, the resident archaeologist, who did a superb job in bringing the castle to life though his unique and passionate delivery.

The cost of entrance was quite good for an adult at £9 a ticket. The castle itself had many different periods from Medieva to !7th century. Included was a surprise from the Templar s within. We took a free tour with a friendly and very knowledgeable guide called Leon. Very into Ludlow Castle History and the Town itself. Any donation excepted at the end of a very good informative tour and well worth it. Please Visit its a real Gem

We visited here recently on our way to Wales, we wasnt here as long as I was expecting us to be however it was a pleasant visit. Guide book very informative but as others have said it could maybe do with more information boards around the site or maybe the option of an audio guide. The day we visited was very windy so wasnt the weather to be reading a guide book. The car park nearby was well priced.

Really? Is there anyone able to write signage and a guide to make a walk round these structures rewarding or educational? Yes probably because if you look at the web and the onsite resources there are illustrations and reconstructions but the fifty p thing we got at the desk was dull and did so little. We didn't get a guided tour and yet this was necessary to avoid people like me coming away unimpressed.

Amazing day at Ludlow with the highlight being the castle. Great value for such a historic venue. Although it is a ruin, it's not just a field of rubble! Just missing a roof or two. You can really get a sense of how the castle was once a show of power. And we had the great fortune to meet up with Leon Bracelin, the resident archaeologist on one of his tours, truly brought the place back to life with his passion and knowledge. On its own the castle is rare in its outstanding condition, with Leon you're transformed back in time.

We came here for a day out whilst visiting Ludlow! What a wonderful little town. Me and my children had a great day walking round the castle grounds, talking to the staff members there, asking lots of questions! The weather was great so that made a difference! My children had a blast. thanks again to all of the wonderful staff and volunteers.

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently working with the Mortimer History Society on content for more informative interpretation boards and leaflets/handouts that bring in a human element as well as the history of the buildings that will also contribute to school key stages requirements so over the next few years there will be more information on both. Watch this space...

Dogs are very welcome in the Castle and Courtyard of the Tea Rooms as long as they are kept on a lead at all times. We love our 4 legged friends. We also have 1 apartment Sir Henry Sidney that welcomes dogs, so if ever you want a holiday with your dog you know where to come.

Hi Gerry
Thank you for your feedback. The weeds are a problem, but the wild flowers that we have growing in the mortar are not going to damage the walls. Every few years we pay a team of specialist abseiling gardeners to get rid of them, as you can imagine its not cheap but great to watch. We get rid of as many as we can within reach of hand and sprayer.
The photos are taken before spring/summer so are without the foliage.
