A small stone watchtower was built on the summit of the castle motte in about 1280. This was replaced in 1790 with a sandstone summer-house built as a birthday present for Laura Pulteney, daughter of the castle's then owner, Sir William Pulteney. Laura’s Tower was closed when we visited but it was worth following the signs to see the views. The area overlooks the station and the river. Unfortunately, most of the town is hidden behind the trees!

This is a charming , fairytale-looking folly , made from coursed red sandstone , perched on the castle motte. It was designed by Robert Adams & built around 1790 by the renowned Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford, for Laura, the daughter of Sir William Pulteney - apparently as a 21st birthday present ( for which I hope she was suitably grateful.) Unfortunately, it was closed to the public upon our visit, but can imagine the lofty views from the top would be quite panoramic over the town and surrounding area.

The entrance to Laura's Tower is through the gates of Shrewsbury Castle, and entrance is free. The tower itself, however, is closed to the public, and there is little by way of explanations or history posted anywhere on the grounds.
So, who was Laura? Was she a beautiful princess? A madwoman who had to kept locked up? An ugly old witch? After a bit of research I found that Laura's Tower is first of all, a folly, and not an actual part of the original castle. Having said that, Laura's Tower is built on the site of the original Norman fortification.
So, who was Laura? As it turns out, Thomas Telford built the tower for Laura, daughter of Sir William Pulteney (MP), as a summer house in c1790. The views are absolutely stunning and well worth the short walk from the castle gate. When visiting Laura's Tower, try to imagine a beautiful young girl, perhaps having a cup of tea, or brushing her hair while looking out over the fabulous meadows and hills of Shropshire.

This is an ancient building which now belongs to the girls high school. It is only open at certain times so you have to watch the local press to get in but it's well worth it.

It's a steep climb, up many steps for a nice view. There's no access into the tower.
The access to Laura's Tower is through the castle grounds, which are lovely.

Set back just behind the armoury a walk through the gardens delivers you to Laura's tower. For adults this folly is A great little piece of history. For children it's a fairy castle / or magic fortification. ( keep a safe eye on them though, it's a good height ) Provides great views over Shrewsbury.

Laura's Tower, is part of Shrewsbury Castle, within the grounds. Not suitable for wheelchairs, as there are some steps to reach it. Not a lot up there, except the tower, which you cannot go inside but the view is brilliant over Shrewsbury.

The actual tower entry is closed right now but still an excellent view from that area. Access to the area is via the ramp in the front garden of the Castle.
Worth going to the tower for the view.
