Tour guide was named Charlotte she was very informative and new all about the prison and made the tour very interesting. Would highly recommend a visit to Shrewsbury PrisonGood afternoon Sheila, Thank you for getting in touch. - OliviaMaidenhead, United Kingdom15 contributionsSuch an interesting place!Such an interesting place! We did the self-guided tour so were exploring in our own time and there was loads to see with lots of information and different areas to explore. Loved the way the cells were displayed throughout the decades but also to be in a modern prison and seeing how it worked was very interesting. Took my mum who isn't normally too interested in historical sites but she really loved this, such a unique experience.Good afternoon D1965PColiviaw, Thank you for your review, we appreciate both your time and your support. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your Self-Guided Tour - it really is one of the better ways to experience the prison at a leisurely pace, this also allows you to take in the history without being too overwhelming. If you ever feel like returning to us, please do as we have a variety of other events for you to try! He took us to all the wanted to see places and then was allowed to walk around the prison at leisure. At the end of our tour we had a drink in the restaurant. This was really worth doing and we'll worth the money.Good afternoon jordnjoel,, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're thrilled to hear that you have enjoyed your experience on the Guided Tour with Graham as your Guide, and we will be sure to pass along your feedback. - Sofia L10 contributionsFantastic dayWe escaped!! This is such a fun experience. Our group of 4 did the cell escape and from the moment we arrived the staff were welcoming and very funny. A bunch of great actors who make the experience entertaining. It is so worth a visit. You also get the tour of the prison included after the escape. You really get an adrenaline boost trying to escape… especially to be the first! You get given an orange jumpsuit to wear so you feel the part. You have to create your story behind why you got sent to prison. It’s fun to really get involved in your character. The experience lasted 2.5 hours. There’s a small, pay and display car park straight across from the prison which we did manage to park in but it was very busy. The train station isn’t too far away which also has parking. We didn’t stay to eat at the restaurant but I heard it’s nice. Don’t hesitate to book… it’s VERY worth it!Good afternoon 300sofial, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're thrilled to see that you have had an exceptional time when participating in our Prison Break experience. It certainly looks as though you won't forget this experience any time soon! We will be sure to pass along your praises to all those involved. In the future, if you consider returning for more, we would certainly recommend trying out our restaurant for yourselves. A fantastic experience from start to finish with excellent staff giving a tour of the prison followed by as much free time as you wanted to explore the prison, although by 1.30 am we had retired back to our cell for the night !! Woken at 6am for a choice of bacon roll or sausage roll before heading off, so glad we had booked up to experience this. No we won’t be back but mean that in a nice way!! Thanks Shrewsbury Prison staff for a great eveningGood afternoon jerryb26, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. It's great to see that you have thoroughly enjoyed your Stay Behind Bars with us, and whilst we are glad to hear that it was enough to sway you from a life of crime, we certainly wouldn't want you to miss out on any of our other exciting experiences. Really interesting tour and chance after to look around further. It was informative/entertaining enough for our 9 year old but don’t think I’d take a young child on it as it does require a lot of listening (that’s what a guided tour is though!). Also the added bonus that kids went free!Good afternoon TAG78Nuneaton, Thank you for leaving us a review. It did not disappoint. So much information and a few spooky things along the way. Had a great time visiting the prison. Wasn’t sure what to expect but it was full of history and a real eye opener. We did the self guided tour and it took about 2 hours (with a stop for delicious home made cake from the cafe) great value for money and would recommend it to anyone.

I chose to do a self tour so could go around at my own pace. I have to say i found this really interesting to get a good inside perspective of what prison life is like. As expected there was lots of empty rooms and some were decorated up to give you a general idea of inmate lifestyle. Very lovely staff and helpful and always happy to any any questions. I had a great visit here and loved it.
Only downside was it could do with some plaques to explain what each room was as there were lots of empty rooms which we had no idea what they were for. Map was basic but i guess the guided tour would of been more helpful. Cafe had a good selection but quite expensive but was very dirty everywhere like carpets, paintwork and music speakers were orange from grime so felt disgusting or a cafe.
Overall id definatly recommended it as i found it really interesting and worth seeing and bring a coat as it can be very cold in there. It took us 1 and a half hours to get round to see everything if you go slowly and can always stop for a coffee half way through. Hope that helps.

Hi Britmatty
Many apologies for the delay in responding to you and thank you for taking the time to review your visit. I think you may have fed back else where as well to which I have responded :)
We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit and the ability to wander at your leisure around the prison. We are working on developing more interpretation spaces and more information boards to enhance the experience for self guiders.
We hope the prices in the restaurant are on a par or below those in the town. We were recently awarded a 5 star hygiene rating so I can assure you all is spick and span!
Many thanks again and thank you for visiting

To say I was disappointed is a huge understatement. I booked the prison escape for my sons birthday and we were really looking forward to it. On arrival we were lined up outside and then taken in to be changed into the orange jumpsuits. This took way longer then expected as there were quite a few people attending in groups and we all had to fill in and sign disclaimers leaving people standing around for a long time just waiting. We were then given a box and sent to stand outside the cell which again takes too long because of the amount of people. I just feel like the first 45 minutes is a lot of hanging around. We were then asked to enter the cell. I was expected to be locked in the cell with clues and games inside to be able to escape the cell and get off the landing as the website suggests! It was nothing like this at all. The cell door was left open for us to freely walk around the wing. Apparently you have to gain clues from the actors who I found just sent you from one person to the next not really helping at all, or maybe choosing who they do and do not want to help. We were aimlessly walking around without a clue in what we needed to be doing and it seemed a lot of other people were doing the same. There was no actual prison escape, you don’t go anywhere! I’ve done many escape rooms over the years and this was truly the worst I’ve done. I think to advertise it the way it is on the website is massively misleading! After the prison ‘escape’ we were all told in a half hearted fashion we were allowed to walk around if we wanted to…. No indication on where we could go within the prison, no information what so ever! Rooms were empty with no information as to what they were used for. In the end we decided to leave. The worst part of it we paid £54 a person as a group of 3 which knocks me sick at the money wasted after looking forward to it for so long. I encouraged a lot of people to look at booking it but I will make sure they do not!

Dear 13144RQwendyh
I'm so sorry to read of your disappointment - this is not how we want customers to feel after leaving an event at Shrewsbury Prison. I'd also like to thank you for taking the time to feedback to us so that not only can we come up with a possible solution for you but we can put it right for future guests.
We take reviews like this very seriously and since receiving yours have conducted an internal investigation. On this occasion we didn't deliver the event to the very high standard that we normally do or should have done and I offer my sincere apologies for this. The matter has been escalated to the CEO who is working on a complete revamp with the events team taking into account all the feedback we have received
We are very disappointed that you had this experience as we pride ourselves on the experience the customer receives.
Please could you email manager@shrewsburyprison.com who is expecting your email and has a possible solution for you

You need to book in advance. Couldn't initially get the day wanted but were luckily still in Shrewsbury the following day.
Went on the 11am tour.
Guide (former prison officer) was very friendly, informative and knowledgeable about the prison and its history.
The content is probably best suited for 13+ due to its delicate content and keeping a child interested.
Tour lasts about 2 hours and you are welcome to remain to view anything you feel you have missed.
All in all yes it is informative but we feel £12 per adult is nearer to the mark.

We had to take the self guided tour, which for a £15 entrance fee was not worth the money. It was interesting to wander round but found the information along the way very poor - I expected posters, displays and audio aids and presentations and a more organised route through the building.
We were unlucky to get stuck behind a tour group and was politely advised by the tour guide that we should find an alternative route around the prison so as not to encroach on his tour. We were happy to do this however we arrived at the execution room at the same time as this tour group and was TOLD to wait outside in the corridor for 15 minutes while the tour guide finished his tour. We did feel like 2nd class citizens.
Maybe having someone in A block would enhance the experience rather than just looking at empty cells.
One of the most disappointing museums I have ever visited. They could do with comparing to other museums to get some ideas of involving visitors who do the self guided tour. The military museum in the nearby castle would be an ideal example and at £4.95 certainly better value for money. - as it is at the moment I would not recommend Shrewsbury Prison to friends

Dear Barry E
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit.
I'm sorry you were disappointed by your visit - from reading your review it seems as though you would have enjoyed the guided tour more.
There are numerous information boards around the prison along with sound boxes and a detailed visitor guide.
We are continually adding to the museum and take your feedback on board. The museum is there as an add on rather than a destination in its own right - although we hope to change this in the future
Kind regards

We attended a prison tour, presented by our guide, Graham. Our tour was very well organised, and extremely interesting. Graham clearly had incredible experience and insight into the running of the prison and provided genuine stories. The facilities were good and parking is just outside for £5.50. The tour lasted around 2 hours and was just about right in duration. We definitely felt we had value for money as opposed to just walking around the building. Thank you!

Just returned from this guided tour. Our tour guild was Mick and he was fantastic telling us all about his time as a prison guard at the prison. The tour last around 2 hrs and after you have done that you are free to walk around and explore yourself. Or go and have a drink and food in the restaurant. Tbf the prices at the restaurant are very reasonable. They don’t do cold sandwich’s at the moment, but you can get a burger and chips or a sausage/bacon bap. Or just a hot drink and cake. They do serve cold drinks and other snacks too. Due to the covid you have to wear masks while you are in the prison but around the outside you don’t have too. There’s lots of hand sanitizer stations around the prison and Mick made sure everyone was socially distancing while telling us all about the prison. We felt very safe. If you want something different to do then please visit you won’t be disappointed imo.

I have been here twice before and have done the self guided tour which I thought was fab. I decided to come here recently and do the guided tour but sadly it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The guide was very enthusiastic and obviously loved doing the tour... I couldn’t fault his enthusiasm. However, I was expecting to find out a lot more information by going back to do the guided tour but I didn’t feel like I did. I felt the tour focused too much on how the guide felt about the prison system and not on the facts about the prison. Social distancing wise the tour if you’re self guided is definitely safe, there’s arrows and hand sanitising stations etc. However on the tour the guide needs to be careful with his distance at times. Felt quite uncomfortable when he was invading people’s personal space to demonstrate certain things. I was also quite surprised at the group size being as big as it was... was tricky to socially distance when in the smaller rooms unfortunately. To end on a good note though, I have had good experiences before this and I know from reading the reviews a lot of people enjoyed the experience, it just wasn’t my cup of tea unfortunately.

Hello,
Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that the tour wasn't your cup of tea like you said, our tours are very highly reviewed. We have worked very hard here at Shrewsbury Prison to ensure the safety of all our customers. We have reduced all our tour sizes considerably, including the Guided Tour. We have been recognized by Visit England as ‘Good to Go’ which means that we have the correct provisions in place to support social distancing, as well as this, we are confident in our delivery. We are sorry to hear you felt this was not adequate, and we will of course take your feedback on board.
Many Thanks,
Lauren

Weather has been awful so we thought we’d give the prison tour a go - something we’ve said we’d do for a while but never get round to booking. Definitely worth a visit!! Graham was great, knowledgeable and funny... you’re welcome to explore on your own once the 2 hour tour has ended too. It was really interesting, we could have stayed & listened to Graham’s stories all day! We’ll be recommending!

My wife, 2 kids and myself were on holiday in Shrewsbury and visited the site last week. I would highly recommend visiting, it is exactly as it was when it closed the doors and you are free to wander for as long as you like (until they are closed obviously).
It is fascinating how secure this building must have been back in the day and now you are free to wander through every cell as you wish.
Coffee and snacks in the cafe were really good and there were plenty sanitising stations and toilets throughout.
We did a few touristy things on our weeks hols but the staff member on the reception was definitely the friendliest and seemed genuinely interested in us having a good visit. She also engaged with our kids at the end of the visit which we also appreciated because none of the other places we went did this.
As a side note, the Social media account also engages with you. This is a bug bear of mine where some companies have FB/Insta/Twitter etc but rarely reply when you try and engage with them. (Why have it then?) I had mentioned in their FB page that I was visiting the next day and they replied quite quickly on the post to say, "looking forward to seeing you, the kids will have a great day"

Hi
I am looking to book and escape room. On the website it states that there are a specific amount to seats remaining... if
I am booking this for 2 people does this mean we have to share the room with others?
Kate
Written 21 August 2023
Good afternoon Kate,
We do apologise for the delay in the response to your question. Our Escape Rooms do have a maximum capacity of 5 per room, however, once you make a booking for that room, even if there are only 2 participants in the room, the room becomes unavailable to anyone looking on the website. This would mean that any amendments will need to be arranged by speaking with us either through email or over the phone.
We hope this helps!

Hi Lesley, thanks for the enquiry. We don't have any on-site parking available, however there is a small privately owned car park opposite the prison's entrance - feel free to use that one on arrival. You will need to pay for this car park when arriving on the day, around £5 for 24 hours.

Looking at booking the escape room and there are a choice of cells, are there any differences between them to help me decide? Thanks

Hi Tanya, thanks for your enquiry. We have two distinct types of escape room; The Cell is your typical escape room which is more mentally challenging having you solve riddles/puzzles and grabbing a key to escape. The Hole is more designed for intermediate players, and has the participants solving puzzles in the dark with handcuffs! The latter is more physically challenging but still a lot of fun!

Hi, we are going to book the escape room for early may, just wanting to know, do we have to book the tour as-well to have a little wander round or will we be able to have a look round after (being included in the admission for the event)
Thanks

Hi Tanya, thank you for your enquiry. When booking the escape room events, you will be given a Self-Guided Tour with this experience. As such you will not need to pay for this on top of the event itself.

I'm coming on Saturday for the behind bars night. Is there car parking near by for the night?
Written 22 September 2020
Hi Simon, there is a small pay and display car park directly opposite the Prison. There is also a Station car park a few minutes away.
