Mixed Up Confusion

I booked lunch here for my wife's 60th Birthday - and booked the Narnia room for party games afterwards. Lunch - it was agreed - would be in the pub. The Narnia room was booked separately and I paid a £50 deposit for the Narnia Room. The member of staff who booked lunch and the room was very helpful. So far so good... BUT One week before the lunch I received a telephone call from the woman who had accepted the bookings . She was very apologetic but announced she would have to cancel the lunch. But I could have the Narnia booking as I had paid a deposit. Although I asked WHY she was doing this, she declined to reply. I asked whether they could accommodate fewer people for lunch (I booked for 12) - and again got no reply. I told her I was angry but would sleep on it and consider my options. The following day I emailed the Old House and told them I wanted my deposit back and would visit them the following Tuesday to get my money back. My email explained the history - giving dates and details. I asked them to acknowledge receipt of my email. I got no reply... This wasn't surprising as I had to make the booking arrangements by paying a personal visit as they didn't answer their telephone and their voicemail informed me that it was full and unable to record messages. Oh yes...before paying this personal visit I had already used their website to inquire about booking lunch and the Narnia Room - and had no reply ! So...communications problems need attending to.. When I went in to collect my deposit the manager (or staff member) I booked with wasn't there and I dealt with a man who seemed to be in charge. He was surprised and baffled by the situation - he showed me the booking book which showed my booking was valid. He knew nothing about the phone call cancelling the birthday lunch. In fact he seemed to have no explanation for what had happened. He gave me my deposit back and I exited quickly. I was very disappointed by the treatment I received from the Old House. Fortunately I have found an alternative venue for my wife's lunch and party.

We went for Sunday lunch during tier 2 restrictions. We had a friendly welcome and all organised and safe. We were shown to our table and had instant service to order our drinks. We had pre booked our meals and this came quickly. The food was absolutely delicious and we were both very happy with our meals. A good portion as not too big. Lovely atmosphere despite being limited on numbers. We love this pub and wanted to support it during this difficult time. We know the staff well and we are always given a warm and friendly welcome. Thank you for a lovely experience.

This pub used to be a dump. Now, the owners are brilliant, great chilled atmosphere, top quality service and fantastic food (I've gone through the menu). Get yourselves to the Old House.

Finally I have eaten in the revamped Old House, have visited quite a few times previously and just drank but always admired the food.
Had lunch a couple of weeks ago I had the fish and chips which was excellent and my colleague had the burger which he said was sublime.
Next time I visit I am definately trying the burger, oh and yes the chips are mega!
It has been said in previous reviews that the place previously was a dump it most certainly is not now.

Having lived in Dorking for over 20 years, we have never really found a local pub we would like to visit regularly....well we have now. The Old House has undergone a huge transformation and is a pleasure to visit. The owners are delightful and very friendly, decor is great, food is very good indeed and the place is so welcoming. It's not full of youngsters hell bent on getting blind drunk and aggressive; it appeals to the more discerning customer who wants to enjoy a really good evening without having to raise their voice in order to have a decent conversation. There's a great outside area too. We have started to recommend it to all our friends and family. A great place to meet, unwind and enjoy a really good meal. We're excited!!!

This is a difficult review to write as the Sunday lunch really deserves a 5 star review…but! Firstly the refurbished pub and new management are very friendly and accommodating, a large family group with excitable 3,4,5 yr olds and a babe in arms can be a difficult mix but the service was excellent and friendly throughout. Across our group we basically covered most of the roast choices and in terms of food quality, how it was prepared and presented was excellent, but the portions were just far too small for what was a £14 dish. The girls were generally satisfied but the guys commented on being hungry afterwards and when is the main course coming? One parsnip (admittedly honey glazed), three small roasties, a yorkie, a spoon of butternut squash a spoon of kale and one slice (admittedly thick) beef a Sunday roast it does not make. A trick that the much missed Highland Cottage did with their roasts was to send in plenty of extra roasties, veg and gravy with the main plates. The puds were good but a touch pricey for a pub, £5.50 for a bread and butter pud, a wee bit topsy I think. I feel somewhat mean as Dorking really needs a good dining pub and one that is reliable for a great Sunday roast. The Old House at Home could achieve this but just needs to address its VFM, either charge less keeping it under a tenner or if charge £14 make sure the portions reflect this. Shame as we won't be back, our bill was just shy of £200, a level of spend you want as regulars not just for birthdays and celebrations.

Hi..The Old House Pub…I used to use the pub back in the mid 70's and loved it..well its even better today.
Poped in for a quick pint and a sandwich on my way through Dorking…super friendly even to the dog sitting at the bar..buzzy atmosphere, great pint and v good avocado + poached egg sandwich..sat on the sofa by the log fire, great. Understand its closing for a makeover..love the old rustic wall panels and beams, don't loose them..and don't go down the trendy route: ie The White Horse…see you again soon.

Came to the Working Halls for a concert and we wanted to eat first. We came here quite by accident as we were looking for somewhere else. What a blessing. The food is absolutely delightful and the staff are really friendly. A great meal and a great venue. We will recommend to our friends and we will be back

This pub serves great food a quirky style. Very much enjoyed a Mother’s day drink in this pub. We chose to sit in secret room through the wardrobe. The outside beach huts for smokers are also very cool.

We came here for drinks after work one day. Very nice beer garden, with individual booths decorated as beach huts and outdoor heaters. Very comfortable. Good service and friendly staff. We studied the menu for a while, looked like nice food but decided to eat elsewhere in Dorking.
