Step back in time at Amberley Museum, a remarkable heritage site in the Sussex South Downs, between Storrington and Arundel, focusing on industrial and transport history.

Most days the bus service and narrow gauge railway run, which take visitors to the far end of the site where the electricity, communications and railway exhibition halls can be found.

Further exhibits include the working printshop, lime kilns, road steam engines, standard gauge line, stationary engines, greenwood village and more.

The Museum is home to traditional craftspeople, such as the woodturners and blacksmith, with a cafe, gift shop, playground, nature trails and picnic areas. It’s well worth a visit and there is plenty to do in all weathers.

We are hosting over 50 events in 2017 from children’s activity days to classic vehicle shows; from the amazing Robotslive in July to our new art activity week in August.

We open from 8th March to 29th October, seven days a week during Sussex school holidays and on Bank Holidays, otherwise Wednesday to Sunday.

Right next to Amberley railway station, with direct trains from London, Bognor and Portsmouth (check before you travel), we have a large, free carpark.

Please see our website for further information.

Absolutely fantastic place to visit. No matter what your persuasion there is bound to be something that takes your fancy. My wife and I took our 81 year old friend for a day out and he had a wonderful time. We used one of the wheelchairs on offer and were even able to take it on the train with us.... More

fantastic querky place....good for all ages. we've been several times but would recommend events days as much more is going on. On a weekday in August not everything was running, for example the train was electric not steam and this was disappointing for my son on his birthday. lovely staff and volunteers, reasonable cafe.

Thank you for your review and I'm pleased to hear you think we're fantastic! Regarding what we offer, we aim to have the train and bus running every day, plus at least three crafts. It's very rare for us not to have this - obviously we're relying on volunteers with specific skills and old technology to provide most of what... More

A lovely day out with lots to see. The staff and volunteers were all very friendly and helpful. A selection of hands on activities kept my three year old entertained! A particular favourite was the telephone display (I'm sure many more hours could have been spent making lots of calls!). The bus and train rides were good fun. Generally accessible... More

Dear Gemma C, thank you for taking the time to review your visit. I'm pleased to hear you had a really lovely day out, and to read your comments on our volunteers and telephone display. A unique place in the heart of beautiful sussex countryside. Where else can you ride on a vintage open-top bus or an old quarry train, see demonstrations of wood turning, stone masonry, a Wimshurst machine and a Van de graaff generator, as well as have a go at playing a 1930s operator on a working telephone exchange? And volunteer staff... More

Thank you for your lovely review of the Museum. You're right, we have an eclectic mix of exhibits, but they all fall into history of industry/transport/craft of the region. Pleased to hear all generations in your party loved it here. More

Loads to do and look at. This is a real interesting place with great displays very well put together. If you are into trains, old buses, old fire engines and general history this is the place for you. The site is extensive around which it is possible to travel on both an old train and an old coach/bus. Well worth... More

But you'll need AT LEAST a day. Do not underestimate the size and scale of this place, it took me 3 separate visits to feel like I'd really seen and absorbed everything this wonderful museum has to offer. It's fairly expensive but worth every penny, and if you live locally I highly recommend getting an annual pass, that way you... More

Thank you for your review of the Museum. Yes you're right, sometimes if the weather is bad we have to close our nature trails for health and safety reasons, however as you say there are plenty of other things to do. I'm pleased to hear you really enjoyed your day! More

Love this friendly museum run mostly by volunteers. Enjoy the train ride and the bus ride. Plenty of indoor displays to see and many of these interactive, Children will love the phones calling each other. The bus station is a gem. We enjoyed a hands on display at the wheelwrights. The volunteers are so friendly and informative and dedicated. Plenty... More

We visited today and had a brilliant time. A really eclectic collection. Restaurant was good value. Had a lovely ride on the train and good to see it was 'personned' by 2 women. The craft village was brilliant although slight disappointment that the wood turners were closed. Got several wooden items for a really reasonable price. All staff were friendly,helpful... More
