White Castle

Lovely old ruin, great feeling of history and the wonder of the medieval times. Lovely location. Easy parking.

We were looking for something to visit on our trip from tbe cotswolds into Wales before we headed up to Snowdonia. We were planning on Goodrich but it was closed. We are so glad it was. White Castle may be out of the way (the gps coordinates get you right there) but it was brilliant. We enjoyed the storyboards but... More

White Castle is excellent - lots of remains with the main bailey walls and towers largely intact. Plus an impressive moat with water. Visit on a clear, sunny day - there are impressive views W into the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park. On cloudy days, you'll see nothing but there will be a great sense of atmosphere. If... More

Called the White Castle because its walls were once plastered white and it's possible to see traces of the plaster in spots. Extensive ruins surrounded by a moat. Good signage making it possible to imagine what it might have been like in the 11th and 12th centuries. Entry is free as is the parking, but parking is limited. We visited... More

Although this castle is a ruin it has a nice atmosphere. It has a very tiny car park . If this car park is full there is nowhere else to park as its situated at the end of a very narrow country lane.

We decided to visit White Castle we had heard it was good. Where we arrived it was free to enter and very quiet. The most noticeable point is it's size, it is huge. The castle is partly ruined, has shallow moat and nice places to explore There isn't many towers to explore but is you like big ruined castles you... More

This castle is free to get in and is really interesting to look round. We went on a damp Friday morning in August and were the only ones there.Well worth a visit.

A very good castle to visit with most of its defensive features still intact and therefore easy to show groups how a castle works. Unfortunately it no longer has an on site custodian and the tower stairs may be locked which is in my opinion taking a lot of the fun out of a visit. Still worth seeing.

We started with Skenfrith (after lunch at the Bell) , then drove past Grosmont and then this castle. Limited parking but as limited visitors parked easily. Free entry but no shop or amenities - well tended and impressive moat. Enough information on signposting.

This beautiful ruin is set on a quiet country road and rarely seems busy. I have always loved the paradox that it is on top of a hill but has a moat! It is large and has survived the years astonishingly well - the round towers in particular are a great tribute to the planners and builders. Sadly you can... More
