The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

Grandson was keen to visit, pleased he took me! Excellent guide made for a fascinating if at times slightly morbid experience. Restaurant good but slightly expensive also a cafe available.

Really enjoyed our visit. Our group guide was cheerful and informative. Gaol and tunnel were interesting and the gallows grim (as it should be).

We booked for the tour and had Eoghan as our guide and he was fantastic. Very enthusiastic about the place and willing to answer any questions. It's good value too for what you get and very interesting to look round. We are a young couple aged 22 and 27 but I'd say it would be good for families too. We... More

I cannot recommend this place enough, I know some may find it a little morbid but each to their own...if you are interested in history and or politics/social studies the goal is well worth a visit. Luckily for us (an not them), we were there early in February and there were only 6 on our tour as opposed to 25-30... More

Decided to do this on our last day in Belfast as we had a few hours to kill and we were not disappointed. We arrived nearly an hour early but the reception staff were more than helpful and allowed us to go with the next tour. Our guide (Eion) was very informative and we actually had a person on the... Planned a visit here for today and was not disappointed. We booked in for the tour and with the tour bus discount it only cost £13. Grabbed a quality sandwich before - well it filled a gap! Charlotte, our guide, introduced herself and it took about 1.5 hours to get around. We both love the "living history" of this experience.... More

Overall a good experience, tour is very informative. You do get to see the room where prisoners were hanged which may not be for everyone, but you have the choice of going in or not. The place is really cold so wrap up. Reception staff very rude, was waiting to buy a ticket with two others for at least 15... More
