What a great find in Downpatrick! I read that the museum held the remains to Dt Patrick's cross. Separately, a local from Newcastle had told me the old prison was worth a look. Who knew they were the same place? The buildings that house the museum are well preserved but still creepy, in a fun way, especially the cell area.... More

I took my grandchildren on a tour of down county museum. They enjoyed the full experience, loved the cell blocks and the stories connected. We stopped off in the museum tea rooms and we all enjoyed a first class lunch. Great day out.

Had an amazing time at this museum with my children (3) and (6). On arrival Moire gave us a great child friendly presentation/ overview of the history of the museum and we ended up spending hours walking around all the rooms. Unfortunately we had eaten but the food in the cafe looked lovely and the views were terrific. Really friendly... More

This place is a well presented museum with friendly and helpful staff. Exhibits are well set out and entire museum is spotless. Amenities likewise are exceptional. A good range of interesting artifacts covering a long time period and a number of historical areas of local interest. Entry is free so remember to donate generously to keep places like this open... Very impressed with this museum. A magnificent use of the former gaol. Very well laid out with plenty of interesting exhibits. We are interested in early Irish Christianity. There are plenty of interesting artifacts and excellent information about them and about the history of the area. There is also a good-sized cafe. Unfortunately we didn't have time to sample its... On a rainy, windy day in January my Husband and I decided to drop into the Down County Museum. We hadn't been there for a few years and while I have certainly recommended this spot to friends,I can sincerely now say the improvements carried out since 2015 have made this somewhere I would recommend people not to miss. The Down... More

Haven't visited for a few years, and we're very impressed by the changes in the museum. There are now lots of very interesting exhibitions, not only about the gaol, but about the history of the area, from prehistoric times right up to the 20th century. Staff all very helpful. Nice cafe. Expect to spend at least 2 hours there. Is... More

I went as a result of reading TripAdvisor reviews. Went before Christmas and had it all to myself while others were Christmas shopping. Loved the exhibitions with information in bite-sized chunks that gave surprising and interesting facts about the history of the area from prehistoric to modern times as well as geology and farming. The archaeological artifacts were fabulous. I... More
