Montrose Basin is the enclosed estuary of the South Esk River. The reserve includes a 4-star visitor centre along with four remote bird hides. Covering 750 hectares, Montrose Basin is home to thousands of migratory birds including pink-footed geese, common terns, knots and sedge warblers. Highlights include telescopes, binoculars and live footage of migratory birds. Children will love the interactive toys and games such as microscopes, wildlife portal and puzzles. Children's activities and themed events are held regularly, as well as formal and informal educational groups run throughout the year. Fairtrade tea and coffee can be enjoyed with panoramic views across the Basin, and a range of wildlife gifts are available from the gift shop.

This is a great place to visit whether you know a lot about birds or not. The basin is a unique and beautiful habitat for an incredible range of bird species. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I will certainly be back to see more of this gem -spotting an osprey is on the to do list.

Wet weather prevented the planned walk and this was a great alternative. Lots to see and engage with, not that much bird activity when we were there but the friendliness and enthusiasm of the staff ensured we all felt welcome and included. The telephone for different bird calls was fun and trying out the telescopes and watching time-lapse video of... More

The centre is excellent, with knowledgable, friendly staff. The setting of the centre is superb, with an elevated view over the basin, scrapes and wildlife gardens. There are a good number of telescopes, if you don't have your own, for viewing the wildlife - and it's all in great comfort, especially if the weather is poor, with a good cafe... More

Birds are a big attraction here as you are at a tidal basin. We saw a wide variety in a short time as well as seals. There are several walks for close viewing and for a small fee you can use the centre's powerful equipment and bird guides. Coffee, snacks and souvenirs are also available. Staff were well informed and... More

I recently visited the Basin Visitor Centre with my 3 year old son, this is the first time I've been since the alterations, I really enjoyed it and found the staff to be very friendly and knowledgeable. My son loved it! The children's corner has so much to do but his favourite bit was definitely the fishing game, couldn't get... More

I have been here a couple of times, recently for a hen party which was fab! The staff were so accommodating and really went out of their way to make us welcome. The basin itself is beautiful and the selection of birds is impressive. There's also a really interesting display and the view from the hide in the main visitor... More

The facilities at the Basin are so well set up for bird watching and all sorts of fun and games. We spent an afternoon there in the Education room playing games as part of a bird-themed hen do- and then came back the next day to do more bird watching on popular demand!! The staff and volunteers were really helpful,... More

This has to be the best bird watching place I've ever been to . Huge, clean windows, with binoculars and scopes at each one. It's heated and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and willing to chat and help you, without making you feel stupid. Basic coffee shop and toilets. Lots of other things to do as well

My husband and I visited last week, wish we had gone earlier in the day but we were using the hides at the opposite side of the basin in the morning. More or less had the place to ourselves as it was about 4 pm when we got there, still got a lovely welcome. The scopes for public use were... More
