Cross the River Dee by boat to visit this enchanting castle on its own island. Once the bustling base of its creator, Archibald the Grim, it is now an ideal spot for exploring, picnicking and perhaps, painting. The island is rich with wildflowers in summer; you might also see ospreys and otters hunting in the river. The castle was besieged by King James II for two months in 1455, and fell after the king bribed the garrison to surrender.

Had a great afternoon visiting the castle with 2 excited children, they totally loved the boat crossing and learning the history of the castle from the boat lady. Went to the bird watching area but never saw an osprey but spotted a deer and a...More

We found Treave Castle well worth a visit. However we were very disappointed in Castle Down & Dumfries Towns which were run down and unattractive. If tourists are to be attracted the towns need to improve. Dirty pubs, few restaurants, drunken teenagers at night.

The young had just fledged but the female was on a post eating a fish. Then one of the young returned to the nest and the male brought another fish. Magic experience and the volunteer was so helpful.

Came over half term, the man who manned the boat was exceptionally informed and amusing - we spent a good half an hour discussing the place and it's history/people and more besides - the castle was great, the wildlife even better. We saw the birds...More

Stopped off here for a visit during our stay in Dumfries. Loved the wee boat trip across to the castle. It is a bit of a walk from the car park to the boat (approximately 800m), but the path is very smooth and well signposted....More

I've visited a few castles in my life, but this one was by far the best. Firstly, you can visit the grounds and the area, including the Osprey and Falcons, (these are wild and not kept), all for free. For three of us, (2 adults...More

I assume it is as the reverse applies to me in England and it used to when up here when I had a NT card. However when I last visited about three weeks ago, the castle was still temporarily closed due to flood damage and a... More
