A mighty fortress, the defender of the nation, and a world-famous visitor...

A mighty fortress, the defender of the nation, and a world-famous visitor attraction - Edinburgh Castle has dominated the skyline for centuries. And the high volcanic rock on which it stands has been occupied for thousands of years. Today it is home to Scotland's crown jewels, three military museums, the Scottish National War Memorial, the Prisons of War exhibition, and much more. The castle offers a fabulous day out - an experience not to be missed.

Once again Scotland does not disappoint, the castle is an amazing place, everything is explained in multiple languages, there are stunning views to see, the old prison cells and even the Scottish crown jewels. Make sure your there for the 1 o'clock firing of the cannon. There is plenty here to entertain all ages, it can be a bit of... More

Edinburgh castle is right in the middle of the city on the top of one of the hills. There's enough to see to fill a few hours as well as great views of the city. There could have been more information boards to give you a bit more background on the history of the castle, otherwise it was great. The... More

We enjoyed visiting the castle. However when we went it was extremely windy outside and you are up on a hill . It was actually a little scary . They ended up closing because of the wind so we didn't get to see everything . It's very fascinating and a must see if you go to Edinburgh.

My family toured the castle and saw the royal jewels on a sunny day in June. Our kids (16, 13 and 10) all enjoyed the tour for different reasons. Oldest liked all the photo opportunities, especially of the Edinburgh skyline from the castle. Our younger son enjoyed the military history portions and our daughter enjoyed seeing the royal jewels. Would... More

You can't miss this if you're in Edinburgh! You can take a free, half-hour guided tour (included with entry price). Prepare for whatever the weather may be. It was very windy when we went!

We had a lovely time looking around the castle and all the small little museums were quirky! The free samples in the Whisky shop were excellent too! Make sure you go to at the right time so you can see the 1 o'clock gun!

Really great audio guide, be sure to get one of those. Lots of information about the castle and its and Scotland's history., made me want to know more. Loved the crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny especially. In addition you get stunning 360 degrees views over the city. And what's more: super friendly staff. Best castle experience so far!

There's no doubting the vast history of Edinburgh Castle, however £15 each is too expensive for the exhibits on show. We did all exhibits in just over an hour

We spent several hours here recently with the children who all enjoyed what the castle has to offer. We did not take the guided tour but just made our own way around. Good value and highly recommended.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
