St Giles’ Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. With its famed crown spire it stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland’s chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen).

Tributes to fallen saints, leaders and heroes. Extensive stained glasses. Be sure to procure a foto pass. Impressive presence of a higher power. Highly recommended.

This building is a little deceiving from the outside it is nice but the inside is a stunning piece of history. The architecture is stunning with so much detail to look at. It is a spiritual place as you would expect with a warm feeling and time to light a candle for loved ones if you wish to do so.... More

Never been to St Giles except for passing the outside on thousands of occasions which is probably normal for a resident of our beautiful city. Visited as part of a school trip with my son and was truly taken aback at the beauty and history inside. Only there for about an hour but easily spend a lot more time investigating... More

This Cathedral is beautiful, located in the Old Town of Edinburgh, it towers over the other, smaller, shops. The huge arch way announces the entrance to the imposing building and as you step in, you realise the scale of the building. The windows are nicely decorated with religious patterns, the walls are filled with Military Memorial names of soldiers who... More

What a surprise this cathedral is. The outside does no where near reflect the beauty of the inside of the cathedral at all. The stained glass is so telling of a story, amazing place, will return

We stopped by this Cathedral yesterday and happened upon a choir rehearsal. Beautiful voices! A free mini concert! The entrance is free but they do encourage donations to help with the upkeep.

The Cathedral is easy to access, since it is located on the Royal Mile. It is free to access the cathedral. The cathedral is beautiful from the in and outside. There are not that many signs with information, therefore if you want to know more it is really nice to ask for a guided tour. They do ask for a... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
