St Giles’ Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. With its famed crown spire it stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland’s chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). Please do not book any tours through TripAdvisor, as they are not endorsed by the cathedral.

Beautiful cathedral, so much history and stunning stained glass windows. Free entry and a peaceful place for a moment of reflection. Only a £2 donation to take photos and worth it to help the maintenance of the cathedral.

Filled in a little time here on or last day in Edinburgh. A compact cathedral, but still with some hidden gems to witness. The chapel in particular was stunning.

This is a typical Protestant church, and a famous enough one at that. There is a wonderful side chapel, however it is only opened during certain hours. Knox was originally interred in what is now the car park and there is a plaque in parking...More

Right in the middle of the Royal mile, St. Giles' cathedral is hard to miss. The church has beautiful stained glass windows and really reminds you of the bygone era. Can get quite crowded in the high season.

A very beautiful church with stained glass windows that are amazing, we only had half and hour as the church was closing. But a lovely place well worth a visit.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

I certainly heard bagpipes, but cannot verify that they are always there - though I imagine so. They were being played each day at the Market bus terminus too.

Not at St Gile's but there is parking in adjacent streets. Public transport is best for Edinburgh.
