Six of us visited Edinburgh for a Christmas day out and one of our party wanted to see the famous Greyfriars graveyard where the little dog was supposed to have waited for his master after his death. Opposite the statue of the dog is the Greyfriars Bobby Bar which looks like a traditional pub. We hadn't booked or anything but... More

Me and my 3 friends spent the evening in this bar on Saturday night. Lovely staff, great local singer and all the crowd were great. The location is fab to go in the day too as the Greyfriars Bobby memorial statue is right outside and the Kirk cemetery is right behind where John Grey and his dog are buried. Also... More

A visit to see Greyfriar's Bobby is a must. This little effigy of the now famous dog sits proudly at the top of Candlemaker's Row and is a highlight of a visit to this area. The Greyfriars Bobby's Bar is a great place to eat, day or night. Good food, well-priced, cosy pub staffed by friendly efficient people is worth... More

Had time to visit while on our way to theatre. Very good bar manager had a grip on this very popular and busy pub. No fuss ordering and food was served swiftly, without compromising quality. Part of the Nicholson chain, so you know what you are getting, we had time for a sweet and coffee, and made the theatre in... More

The hospitality in this establishment was second to none. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the menu selection excellent and reasonably priced. The food arrived in a timely fashion and proved to be worth the wait. I was pleasantly surprised by the superior quality of this pub lunch. The waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive. The restroom was well... More

Friendly welcome in this old building right by the side of the statue for grey friar's Bobby. We all ordered a sandwich which came with chips. All of which were nice and fresh and tasty. Service was reasonable so if in the area worth trying. The haggis dish looked nice although we did not choose it.

We ate here multiple times on our stay in Edinburgh, partly because of the location and mostly because of the great service and good, standard Scottish fare. We tried many things like haggis, burgers, fish and chips, Scottish salmon, etc., and everything was delicious. The staff were very attentive and engaging. My only complaint was that I ordered a gin... More

Spent a pleasant hour here with my friend where we had a drink followed by a nice coffee. Pub is in a great location and had a nice atmosphere bit lacking something special. Nice bit not overly memorable.

Went there for a family meal on holiday the food was really bad and when I said something about it the waitress ignored me.I complained to the manager who had a couldn't careless attitude and said you should have told someone which I did.I still had to pay full price even though I never touched my food. The manager needs training... Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
