Planet Out is such an amazing bar! I visited whilst on a long weekend away in Edinburgh and thought this place was brilliant. The staff were so friendly and the other customers were really friendly and welcoming which is so often not the case in gay venues. The music was great and we very much enjoyed playing on the quiz... Great, relaxed bar for all ages. It has a lot of regulars, judging by the friendly greetings. So it is not a twink bar, go to CC Blooms for that. It has no 'look' going on. All ages, all varieties of LGBTQ. Sofas, stools, pool tables - a proper pub/bar. Posters on the walls for their Friday drag shows, queens... More

Not been here for a while so was pleasantly surprised to see it had been revamped a bit. Comfy couches were nice and a small dance floor beside the DJ booth. There was no quiz on which was a change instead it is Bingo with Cilla on a Thursday night, prizes are £10 for a line and a bottle of... More

Visited a couple of time during our visit. Everyone seemed to know each other and were friendly to visitors. Plenty of comfy chairs as well as a nice little dance floor.

This was a major improvement over an earlier appointment at a certain aggressive, homophobic little place in Leith named Joseph Pearce. After a gruelling affair (no pun intended as I'm a semi closet case) at the aforementioned horrible little bar, this place was a ray of sunshine. My calloused blacksmithing hands were caressed in this lovely little place by my... More

I and 22 friends from Glasgow descended on Planet on Saturday evening for a night out. Door staff were great and bar staff were so friendly. DJ Laurie played great tunes and we all had a great night. We were made so welcome and would recommend. Toilets could be doing with a clean !

This bar is so much fun, the drinks are cheap, the staff are fabulous and the music is great for dancing even early on in the night. A bar with a busy dancefloor before midnight isn't a common occurrence in Scotland but it happens here. Only reason it's not 5 star is that the ladies' toilets are not ideal. The... More

I must say we met the most rude and inconsistent bouncer ever at this place. We had a great night out in Edinburgh and were advised to visit this place, my friend was refused because he was wearing trainers and this was despite several people clearly being in trainers! As the bouncer rejected several people stood beside him smoking as... More

A nice gay bar situated in Edinburgh. With plenty of seating and also a dance floor at the back of the venue. I was there midweek and it was not to busy, found could take awhile to get served at times and also limited to just two shots per person per bar visit. Various different nights happen during the week,... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
