St Andrews Castle is the ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews, dating in part from the 13th century. On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the city's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and the focal point of the church in medieval Scotland. Explore the underground 16th-century siege mine and counter-mine, and the 'bottle dungeon', one of the most infamous castle prisons in medieval Britain, which was cut out of the solid rock. John Knox and George Wishart may have been imprisoned in this dank and airless space, and this is where its believed Cardinal Beaton’s body was kept when he was murdered in 1546. Nice hour out with great views. Kids would love it. Things to see and explore. Disappointed no discount for students.

The castle sits right on the water. It is worth a visit. The visitor center is informative. The ticket also lets you into the cathedral.

Worth seeing, did not bother going in. The history of hanging reformists then cardinals was interesting. Pretty place

Look from the outside first, set on the cliff with a lovely coastline below, with fulmars and herons. The entrance is to the modern shop, which you can also visit afterwards. Don’t rush through the exhibition - it’s quite interesting and once inside the castle...More

This location should be paired with the cathedral as you can buy an admission ticket that covers both places.

Great castle ruins on a bluff over the water. There is usually a discounted price for both the castle & cathedral in St. Andrews but the staff was shorthanded the day we went so some of the cathedral was not open. That was disappointing. There...More

It is worth the small fee to enter the grounds and ruins of the castle. From the castle itself, you can have great views of the sea.
