Enjoy some peace among the magnificent ruins of this sacred place, which dates back to the 1200s. Admire the glorious west front, the sumptuous decorations and the atmospheric chapter house. There are spectacular views from the towers. An unruly nobleman burned the cathedral in 1390, and during the ferment leading to the Protestant Reformation of 1560 it was the scene of a violent attack.

Please note: The towers at Elgin Cathedral are currently closed to allow the install of a new permanent exhibition. They will reopen on 25 March 2016.

Although in ruins this cathedral is simply beautiful and breath taking. The few remaining built areas show real art / craftsmanship. I can imagine if it was still intact it would be one of the biggest and most beautiful cathedrals around!

They have modernized the two front towers we were told. In the right front tower there is the effigy of Sir Archibald that was uncovered about 80 years ago. They have made a laser light show to show how he was dressed and the damage done over the years during the restoration period (1500's). In the left tower you can... More

Amazing ruins with a lot of rich history around them. The graves were fascinating to read and explore. Passed a few hours in Elgin while waiting :)

I have walked around and through this place for decades. Now however they charge over £7 for locals to have a quick look round (fiver + for kids) I'm all for charging a fee however this is just too much and kids should go free. So instead, back to the old days of just walking through from the other side... More

Went twice, nice ruins, good views over Elgin. Mainly ruined, but the west side is mainly intact. Displays of statues and stained glass inside the bits still accessible.

Stopped on the off chance. Was great to see so much still standing and preserved. It was a Scottish run site not national trust therefore was what I felt was steep but there was a lot to be seen and take in

A gorgeous large set of ruins that are very photogenic. The cathedral is open all year. We thought it was a bit expensive... if you want to view the ruins, you can walk all round the fence that surrounds it and take photographs from every different angle without having to pay. Paying to go inside, you'll get to see loads... More
