Elcho Castle is a handsome and complete 16th century fortified mansion with three projecting towers on the banks of the River Tay. This is a castle to explore. Parade up the grand staircase or scurry up the service stair, venture into the well-appointed kitchen and admire the views over the countryside from the high battlements. The remarkably complete house of the 1500s was the country retreat of the wealthy Wemyss family. Its orchard has been replanted with traditional varieties of apple, pear and plum and has become a haven for butterflies and wildlife. The castle still has in place original wrought iron grilles to protect the windows. The interior is complete and roofed, with remains of decorated plasterwork.

This is a lovely hidden gem. Don't expect anything on the scale of Edinburgh or Stirling but there is no lack of history here. Because it is quiet and not pristine the kids could explore and run around a bit more. We spent a couple...More

Was told about this gem by a friend who visited this site. This gem should get more advertising. We were the only people there. Great history in a secluded part of Perthshire.

We visited Elcho Castle on a family day out, we were on our way up to the Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry and decided to stop for a few adventures on the way. We stopped here and at Huntingtower Castle as they are both relatively close...More

Great example of a castle with many levels to explore. Kept the kids amused as we wondered what life was like in it's hey day. Would've given 5 stars but the entrance fee was expensive IMHO

Small and interesting. You can imagine how it was lived in..Guide very knowledgeable about orchard, explaining the varieties of apples. Well worth a visit ! Not the biggest castle, but lovely surroundings.

Wow! What a fabulous castle. So many rooms are still intact. It was a proper home. It has 16 toilets (none working). You can climb up to the roof. There are little rooms and big rooms. It has an excellent guide book. There is an...More

Interesting castle, friendly staff. Would say you only need 1-2 hours for it, don't go thinking it's an all day activity, but would recommend it (there was a primary school group visiting when we went, that would put some people off but I thought it...More

An incredibly well-preserved castle, with plenty to see, nice and friendly staff, and can even take photos of everything!

We took a couple of hours to visit this castle as it was local to us in Perth. It was worth a couple of hours but needs no more. Great views from the top of the castle and free apples in season.

Loved the castle and grounds. Lovely to see the orchard trees laden with fruit some of which we were invited to take away free from a bowl in the gift shop. The castle is also highly interesting with fantastic views from the top.

Rhynd is very small not even a village! and you would be at least 1 hr from Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport is closest but accessing the location requires a car Perth is the closest main centre for accommodation etc.

The castle is open during the summer months only. It's open daily, but seems to close for lunch most days. When we were there, lunch was 1-2pm. You can wander round the grounds while it's closed though. There are picnic... More
