There seem to be three levels of castles that we have found in Ireland: you have the top tier like Cahir and Trim that have everything fixed up and it costs money and there's parking. Then you have tier two that has good parking and is mostly maintained like Duckett's grove and it's free. Then the bottom tier are the... More

Not easy to find as Ballymoon is sitting splendidly,as it has for 800 years,in the middle of a grass field. In all honesty there is not much to see other than the ruins of a square ancient fortification built by the Carew family in those lawless times but interesting nonetheless and free. The road is fairly busy and there is only a... During a day trip, this was a site we wanted to see. However, the traffic was very busy, so we did a couple of drive byes, to see it. It is a shame there is no proper parking safely off the road.

One of the many castle ruins in Ireland, but still looks majestic. Parking is just across the street, and then you walk through the field to the castle.

It's hard to describe Ballymoon castle in more than just a partially complete castle ruins in a field. There is an information board that deciphers the remains into their original intentions, but despite not being much, it's quite nice just to walk around somewhere and explore what's left, seeing previous fireplaces and arrow slits in the walls. As another reviewer... More

This was the first ruins my husband and I visited when we arrived in Ireland and it really was fun. There is no parking and it is easy to miss - we drove past the castle twice before finding it and squeezing our rental car onto the shoulder of the road. We crossed the small wooden foot bridge and walked... More

There is very little of this castle left apart from one wall. There is not a lot one can say about it as its origins seem to be obscure. The local landscape is pretty though.

Its a bit of history right on our doorstep. I pass it everyday. My older children loved going there as young kids. Playing and exploring. Great place.
