We travelled in a modern comfortable minibus driven well by expert guide Martin. The trip was informative, interesting and varied. Martin guided us around the sites as required. Newgrange was done by on site guides, and we had ample time to see the newly restored visitors centre there. Plenty time for coffees and food at Tara and Newgrange as well. All in all, a relaxing and stimulating day out from Dublin. Stout footwear is useful, binoculars as well as the views can be spectacular.

We took this tour from Dublin. It was very interesting and our tour guide was excellent. We visited Newgrange first. We then went to Monasterboice monastic site. Our guide gave us a very nice tour. We then stopped for lunch in Slane and finished at the Hill of Tara. Our guide gave us an introductory twenty minute tour and then we had about an hour and a half to explore and visit the shop or have a snack.

Martin, via Day Tours Unplugged, is a friendly, great tour guide who provides useful info without overwhelming the group. We took their tour to the Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough. We made the mistake of taking the Mary Gibbons Newgrange Tour. The site was amazing but Mary didn’t stop talking for 4 hours. No pausing to let us appreciate the amazing countryside or to even absorb the important aspects of a major site before she rattled on to talk about something else. It was so overwhelming we fled the bus at an earlier stop in Dublin just to get a break sooner from her nonstop noise. If you like traveling with 50 people and nonstop chatter, take Mary Gibbons. if you like respectful, knowledgeable and good tour guides for the same price, then take the small coach tours with Day Tours Unplugged. Wished we had taken them twice.

Back in January I booked a tour with Day Tours Unplugged for November. But due to Covid 19, it became clear that we would not be able to go to Ireland and go on this tour. I have been trying to contact them about my booking since September, but there has been no reply to any of my messages, on any of the contact platforms they offer.
I understand that this is a difficult time for small businesses, but the least they could have done was answer my questions.
Terrible customer service, and I would definitely not recommend Day Tours Unplugged, unless you're okay with losing your money if the tour gets cancelled.

I booked a tour to Newgrange with Damien for March 22, 2020. Nobody knew at the time much about the COVID-19 virus or its impact on tours. However, here is my issue: I contacted Famine twice, once by email and once by phone (12 days before tour set to depart) to enquire if the tour was still operating or not. At my phone call, Damien confirmed the tour was not operating as the Heritage site was closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Why did not email me himself to inform of cancellation? 2 emails later, from me, regarding a refund were ignored. I have not heard from the company since the phone call, nor received any refund or any other offer or information. I understand times are difficult. It is not the refund that concerns me as much as the lack of professionalism or courtesy to a client. If the manager of the company experienced illness, or some other troubles and was not able to help me, then please accept my apologies for this negative review

Fiona, many thanks for your communication. As a small family company we are dealing with this unprecedented situation as best we can. Unfortunately I am currently incapacitated and attending the Royal Victoria hospital in Dublin. I am extremely sorry for the delay in addressing your situation. As soon as I am in a position to do so, you can be assured I will sort this out for you. Thank you for your understanding at this moment in time. Stay Safe, and do not hesitate to contact me directly via e mail. Damian

Note: verbosity ahead. Skip to the TL;DR if you prefer.

I hate writing bad reviews. I'd rather write nothing at all. But I really feel compelled to warn travelers so they don't end up in the same sad situation I found myself in with this company. I traveled through Ireland solo at the end of August. Two of the most important things I wanted to see, if not THE most important, were Newgrange and the Hill of Tara. I considered reviews of the couple of tour companies offering these tours carefully. Mary Gibbons' tour sounded lovely, but there were some folks who felt it was too big and impersonal. These places hold enough significance to me that I wanted to go for something more intimate and special. I decided to book through Daytours Unplugged because of that one factor. They only had availability for the last day I was in Ireland, which made me a little nervous, but I pulled the trigger anyway. When I arrived in Dublin I took extra care to re-confirm with the company that my tour was a go and I was not going to miss out. The day of the tour arrived and I walked to the meeting place at Molly Malone's statue, again, making sure I was early as I was told that if I were late the driver would likely not wait. The driver appeared, and I happily got into the van. I thought it odd that no one else was there, but whatever. Well, 10-15 minutes later, the driver returned with news that totally shocked me. There were three other people booked on the tour and none of them had shown up. They were cancelling the tour. I could not believe this. Refused to believe it. I was gutted. The driver felt quite bad about it, but said there was nothing he could do. I do not blame him at all, but I do think it was really really terrible of them to do this. As I tried rather in vain to gather my composure, the driver took me to the bus station and told me I could get a bus out to Drogheda and from there get to Newgrange. It was at that point my only option, but I would miss out on the other parts of the tour. I did in fact go to Newgrange, and am glad I did. But I'm still sad about it, and really think the company should consider handling these situations differently; they could have let me know in advance that there was a possibility of cancellation due to such low numbers and given me the option to try to book in with another tour. That seems only right to me. Supposedly this rarely happens, but I heard elsewhere that it has happened quite a bit of late. Do not let this happen to you. If you are traveling in a group of less than four, I really recommend you look elsewhere, because they will cancel without all four. I really regret my choice, and hope that this review will help someone else from learning the hard way.

TL; DR

If your party is less than four, consider carefully as this company will cancel a tour without notice if less than four people show up for it. For other places, or if you have loads of flexibility, maybe this is not such a big deal. For Newgrange, it really really is.

Many thanks for taking the time to review your experience. I appreciate that you were disappointed that the tour to Newgrange was cancelled. As you pointed out there were another 3 persons scheduled to travel, and the tour was going to run on that date. It transpires that the three other passengers were also at the pickup point with there confirmation documents and proceeded to get onto another tour companies Boyne valley tour. The only reason we are aware of this is because they rang us from the hill of Tara at approx 10am to inform us of this situation. (Not sure how this happened as the other company did not have them on their passenger list, and indeed their tour itinerary does not even include Newgrange...I could mention the company here but I am not going too currently) Now not to drag this out any further, you are correct this is very rare, we did not contact you in advance because there was no reason to do so there were the minimum 4 persons booked on, yourself plus 3 others, the tour was running as scheduled. As you mentioned the driver and mini van arrived on time at the location to commence the tour. We do have a policy that in the event that there is only 1 passenger available to travel, we will cancel the trip. This is simply a practical measure to protect both passenger and employee in the modern world today. I appreciate fully that you were disappointment, the situation was beyond our control. Your guide was giving the other 3 persons the benefit of the doubt thinking that they were late. We did offer you an alternative tour for free for the following day, it was however unfortunate that it was actually your last day in Ireland. I am delighted to see that your guide brought you down to the central bus station, and provided information to allow you to travel up to experience Newgrange. Please feel free to contact me directly if you require any additional details regarding this matter. I have been in touch with the other passengers and they have no problem with me passing their information onto you if required. Once again thank you for your understanding regarding this unfortunate and unavoidable situation. Damian

I booked this tour online from the UK a couple of weeks before travel, as I had seen the good reviews on here- don't be fooled!
I was emailed two days before the actual trip to say that the tour was cancelled due to scheduled road works on the route and it was unable to operate! I was very disappointed. I wasn't convinced this was the case as I had actually emailed this company a couple of months before and gave them two dates and one of which I later booked was not mentioned. As there was availability showing online I decided to book.
Day Tour Unplugged did offer me a totally different tour which would have cost more but didn't interest me.
Wait for it...... Upon arriving in Dublin I got chatting to the taxi driver about the tour, and he told me that there were no scheduled road works at all around the mountains and to go into the tourist office (loads scattered about Dublin) which we did. I was astounded when I was offered the tour with the company that had cancelled! The lady rang the company to be told that the weren't running the Wicklow mountain tour that day as they were fully booked! I was offered a day after which when I said that I needed six places- strangely this was ok, even though weeks before I was told that they only had four spaces left and I needed to book quickly! For clarity- this company runs a 16 seater mini bus only! I was told that if I didn't book with them I would end up on a big coach- but this was not the case either. There are numerous companies operating some did have a big coach others mini buses, all of which seemed to be having a great day when we saw them at various locations throughout the day.
I contacted Damian at Day Tours and was told all routes were exclusive to each your company- again I was told by various others this was not the case, and after all there is only one "PS I love You" location on this tour!
The cost for half a day with this company is €30 from 1pm until 6pm. All the other companies that I saw advertised were less than this for a full day in the mountains- I ended up paying €26 for a full day (9am-6.30pm) and was on a 16 seater bus.
The only redeeming thing about Day Tours is that they did refunded my money.
I would certainly wait until you get to Dublin to book, there was plenty is availability with numerous companies.
I understand that things can happen and I was offered a different tour, but why they wasn't just honest is just beyond me.
We had a great day out in the end, and saw some beautiful sites. Just a shame that Day Tours Beasley convinced us that the roads were closed! Even though we went through all the mountains- there was not one sign of a roadwork in sight!!!

Thank you for reviewing your experience recently. Once you book online you receive a booking confirmation e mail from us. This e mail indicates clearly the reasons why we might cancel a tour booking. It clearly indicated that from time to time our route may be affected by either road closures or indeed on occasions due to weather related issues, which are beyond our control. It has always been our company policy to inform guests in advance of their tour date by e mail if we are made aware that there is a problem in order to minimize the impact this may have. and also to allow our guests an opportunity to make alternative arrangements. The information about road closures in the area were also posted on our twitter feed in advance. Furthermore we did contact you two days ahead of your booking, as you mentioned. We also offered you an alternative tour route at no extra cost, however you indicated that you were not interested in this route, and I fully understand. You were also offered the same Wicklow tour on the date before and after the scheduled tour booking, which you turned down, and I fully understand. A total refund was then made as you have indicated in your review. You are 100% correct we did not run the tour you booked to Wicklow, as our unique route was affected. Taxi drivers and tourist office's aside, we are ultimately responsible for the decision to cancel, based on the information we received in advance of the tour. Our policy has always been to keep our guests updated prior to their tour dates. I did answer your concerns already in a number of e mails, and please do not hesitate to contact me again at any stage. Once again as indicated in previous e mails we are sorry for inconvenience this situation may have caused you.

I've wanted to see Newgrange for years, but was worried if my 12 year old daughter would dig it. I had nothing to worry about because Damian, our guide, sparked interest in my daughter. His intelligence, stories, introductions, mannerisms, and friendliness swept her off her feet. I wouldn't be surprised if she becomes an archeologist as a result. We are buzzing with the amazing experience of the day. Newgrange was amazing and Damian made our day even more incredible. He took us to Monasterboice after I told him I was interested in religious relics. He showed us where the Pope visited in the late 70's, and the American Ambassador's house, and even the President's house! We had no idea the Dublin Zoo was so incredible until Damian told us of Dublin's efforts to save and help near extinct species. I am already planning my next trip with Damian to all the other neolithic sites all over Ireland. Thank you Damian and Day tours Unplugged!

Work takes us to many places around the globe. We don't have much time to see the sights, so when we do have time, we take it! Several fellow travelers recommended trips to the country to see Newgrange, and as is turned out, Day Tours Unplugged was able to book me and my boss onto a tour with less than 24 hours notice. Unexpected and much appreciated!

Our tour guide Damian picked us up at the Molly Malone statue at 830am on Tuesday morning. The group was a smaller one, which in many ways made the trip even more delightful. Damian, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and personable from the beginning to the end, with a great sense of pacing. Our first stop was Newgrange...perhaps it was the time of year or going midweek, but it felt like we had the place to ourselves. We even got lucky with the weather and enjoyed a cool, sunny day for the most part. Our guide switched off the lights at one point and we were able to see some illumination... how cool is that?

From there, we took a leisurely drive through the backroads to Monasterboice to see the High Crosses. This was probably my favorite place on the stop, with endless photographic opportunities. Next, onto the Hill of Slane, with monastic ruins associated with St. Patrick. This was a fun place to climb around in, with a few intact spiral staircases and a view of the valley that can only be experienced. Last but not least, our trip ended with the Hill of Tara. It was beginning to turn a bit weatherwise and it was a bit cold and muddy... not like that ruined the experience in any way! I wish I could describe the feeling of being in and among a place so ancient yet timeless. Just go on this tour and experience it for yourself.

I couldn't have asked for a better outing. The small size of our group ensured that everyone got to do everything they wanted to do. Even if we'd been at max capacity, that would have been 14 people... still a very intimate size! Big props to Unplugged for being willing to take a much smaller group out; I know there's a very real business question of diminishing returns when your group isn't of a certain size. The overall vibe was relaxed and leisurely. We never felt rushed or on a clock. The length of the tour was perfect... it's the most part of a day and back in Dublin by 4-5pm in time for dinner. My boss and I even ended up at the Winding Stair for dinner on Damian's recommendation (also a great place to eat, btw!). Wish we could have done half of Damian's suggestions, but I guess that means we just need to come back sometime!

I would definitely recommend this tour for people who like smaller groups, history, and culture. It's a great deal for 45 Euro. You'll get to do so much on this tour but you'll never feel rushed in the process. Bring a camera, a good pair of shoes that you don't mind getting a little muddy, dress for light to moderate hiking, and bring a jacket even in summer; the hills get a lot of wind and can be chilly at any time of year. Bring a few Euros for spending money as well; Newgrange and Tara both have gift shops and very passable food/drink options if you want mementos, souvenirs, or just need a cappuccino to warm up. Once you have those things, just relax and enjoy a top-notch tour with top-notch guides. Slainte!

This is the third tour we have taken during our visit to Ireland, all with different tour companies. The others to the Giant's Causeway and to Newgrange were wonderful full day affairs but we were looking for something in the 4-5 hour range this time around. We chose the tour to Wicklow and Glendalough and were delighted that we did so. The group was much much smaller than the other tours, about a dozen in all, the driver Martin was informative and funny and answered questions readily and intelligently. But the highlight was the magnificent scenery of Wicklaw, and the majestic ruins of Glendalough where we were given sufficient time to walk to the lakes that give the place its name (with deer in the field and the many green colours in the fields and forest, and in the distance the mist was on the mountains. Magic. I recommend this highly.
