About
"The Gate Theatre was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir. From it's very beginnings, the Gate offered Dublin audiences a way into the worlds of European and American theatre, as well as classics from the modern and Irish repertoire. A space rich with history, it was at the Gate that Orson Welles, James Mason, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Michael Gambon began their prodigious acting careers, and it has served as an incubator of ground-breaking creative talent for almost 90 years now. Award-winning director Selina Cartmell has served as Artistic Director of the Gate since April 2017. Her first season “The Outsider” continues into the second half of 2018 with shows including; Stephen Sondheim’s dark and thrilling musical ASSASSINS, the world premiere of Roddy Doyle’s The Snapper, Shakespeare’s Hamlet featuring Oscar-nominated actress Ruth Negga in a production directed by Yaël Farber, and a festive return for our acclaimed The Great Gatsby."

I can't wait for the Gate to open again. We miss the top quality actors and plays, in a very special Theatre with so much history. Come on Gate, you can survive this pandemic. Support the Gare please.

Visit at Gate Theatre in Dublin - Christmas Carrol
Dec 2019 • Friends
I highly recommend this theatre. I could see there a play entitled A Christmas Carrol. The play displayed realistic sets and the beautiful costumes from the 19th century. The actors played with tuneful bells at the beginning and at the final moments of the performance, which was magnificent and everyone could feel the atmosphere of Christmas. The acting was very good. This is a play conveying a universal truth and everyone should see it. The stage was close to the public, so the actors had the possibility to interact with the audience.
It was an unforgettable experience.

It is a fabulous theater and for a person like me who wears hearing aids they hearing assists. We were staying within a 10 minute walk so no problem for us getting there. We did take a cab home since it was late and no problem getting one

christmas carol
Dec 2019
First time in the gate to see the Christmas carol. Nice little venue and intimate, the way the stage was set. The bars in the gate are awkward with the curved wall. Not really much room to sit or even stand without getting in peoples way. Toilets are ok...not the best.

More than just world-class theatre!
Jan 2020
I should not have to vouch for the world-class standard of theatre at this revered and historical gem - so I won't. But what many prospective patrons may not know (and this adds greatly to my enjoyment of a top night's entertainment) is the standard of the theatre bar and staff. I know of no other theatre anywhere in the world that I have visited that has such an intelligent and informed choice of fine gins and whiskies, all served by knowing and enthusiastic staff. It makes one look forward to getting there early and also enjoying the interval. Other theatres/opera houses/venues take note: whike you focus on maximising bar profit, the Gate focuses on catering to their clientele. Bravo Gate!!!

Beautiful Architecture
Nov 2019
Went to see an amazing play by Colm Toibin which was set in this beautiful theatre. I am not crazy about some of the recent productions here since the previous director, Mr. Colgan left, but once in a blue moon, there is a spectacular production.

The Snapper
Jul 2019
A very intimate theatre at the top of O'Connell street. The show was very funny with a great cast. The atmosphere in the theatre is wonderful because it is so small. you feel very close to the stage in a good way and visibility from all seats is brilliant.

Exciting performance in a splendid theatre
Sep 2019
The Gate is known for far ranging and experimental theatre. Beckett’s Room was a shining example, engaging and provocative. The theatre building itself is worth a view.

The Snapper
Aug 2019 • Couples
Went to see The Snapper, which was a great show.
The theatre was handy for our hotel and the wonderful restaurant we visited for a pre-theatre meal.
The bar and waiting areas are small and cramped and toilet facilities are very limited, but that was quickly forgotten one seated in the main auditorium.
We had seats in row E, and they did not feel too close to the stage. The venue is fairly small and it looked as though all the seats would have been good.
