Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

That’s what the sign in the church office warns but we did not encounter any scurrilous fellows , except perhaps our guide, no he was charming and harmless really. Kind of a neat off the beaten track site. Seems if your family had sufficient euro...More

There were signs pointing the way but then no point of entry was visible. Disappointing result for me.

Have been on this tour twice and have loved it both times. So interesting and so funny too! Both times the tour guides have been one of the highlights of our trip. I'll be coming for a third visit next year!

We went there on the urging of others because of the crypt which houses mummified bodies. They were discovered accidentally when a number of coffins were opened from the weight of other coffins on top of them. The church is impressive and to is thought...More

we loved the tour guide and the tour of the crypts was really fascinating. Tours are only available on Saturdays between 10am - 12:45pm; and cost EUR6. They only accept cash! It is a great tour for people looking for something a bit different.

This was relatively inexpensive, so we were not expecting much. The tour guide did surprise us though. We went into 2 of the crypt hallways to view the family crypts. The guide was very educated and animated. There were 5 of us, and one gentleman...More

Looking for something different and to get you out of Temple Bar? Take a stroll along to St Michan's Church to meet an 800 year Mummy. A short tour (so the kids won't get bored) but only 6 euros, our Guide took his time explaining...More

It was 3 or 4 Euros this year. Call ahead to make sure they'll have a tour guide available when you wish to go or you won't get to see the crypt.

Yes, there are tours throughout the day, never any formal times, just present yourself at the door and ask, you might have to wait no more than 30 minutes for a tour to start. Not sure when they close.
