About
The Bishop’s Palace Museum houses a display of Waterford treasures from 1700 to the 20th century, and gives visitors a wonderful insight into the history of what was, up until the 1750s, Ireland’s second city. 'The Mall is a beautiful walk, about 200 yards long… facing it stands the Bishop’s Palace, which not only adds a considerable beauty ... the Palace is a fine building of hewn stone, with two fronts, that next to the Mall is beautifully ornamented with a handsome portico.' (Charles Smith’s History, 1746)' This exquisite architectural jewel, now a museum, continues to delight over 250 years later, the ground and first floors furnished as a very elegant 18th century townhouse. The top floor brings 'old' Waterford alive from the 1900s to the 1960s. Unveiled in 2019, Masterpieces in Glass is a re-enactor led experience culminating in a 17 minute 4D presentation detailing the long history of glass making in Waterford and vividly immersing you 18th and 19th century Waterford.

A real piece of Waterford history
Sep 2020
A great experience. The guide, in the character of the Quaker daughter of the glass maker, really illuminated the rooms and objects. The 3D animation was excellent (watch out for the Montgolfier balloon). The receptionist was also a mine of information. Well worth it!

Wonderful experience, really enjoyed.
Aug 2020
I absolutely loved this building, if you enjoy looking at old furniture, paintings, china and glassware, this is the place for you.....really enjoyed walking from room to room, very interesting history on old Waterford families, there is a beautiful harp and some lovely clocks on display....there are rooms upstairs with military memorabilia and a music room with showband stuff..... really great but don't bring children, this is not the place for them as there is loads of glassware and china on display.

Good afternoon Mary Thank you for your wonderful review of your tour of the beautiful Georgian Bishop's Palace. You never mentioned if you had taken the wonderful guided tour, all of our guides are very informative and love to bring the history of the palace and its artefacts alive with their stories and tales of the times gone by, so it really does enhance the experience. The new '4D Masterpieces in Glass' exhibition which is now included in the tour of the palace traces the history of glass making in the city from the Penrose family starting manufacturing in the 1700's up till modern day and its a great way of understanding the development of glass making in the city, especially of you plan to take the factory tour in the House of Waterford Crystal, which is across the road from the palace. We look forward to welcoming you to the palace again in the near future. Go raibh míle maith agat! #Waterford #LoveWaterford #CrystalCity #Georgian #History #KeepDiscovering #DiscoverIreland

Good afternoon 448christinek Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent visit to the beautiful Georgian Bishop's Palace. The building is all about the Georgian period in Waterford city, Ireland's oldest city leading into the 1900's. The Bishop’s Palace Museum houses a display of Waterford treasures from 1700 to the 20th Century, and gives visitors a wonderful insight into the history of what was, up until the 1750s, Ireland’s second city. Waterford city boasts the finest collection of 18th Century architecture of any city in Ireland outside of Dublin. Its great legacy from this era includes elegant architecture, silverware and of course, fine glassmaking. This period of elegance began in Waterford in 1741 when the Anglo-German architect Richard Castles designed the wonderful Bishop’s Palace. Castles built the Palace with its front overlooking the town wall which he had reduced in height so that it formed part of the palace’s terraced garden. Today Richard Castles is celebrated as one of Ireland’s greatest architects having designed most of the great houses of Ireland including the seat of the Irish parliament, Leinster House in Dublin. The Bishop’s Palace Museum reveals the story of Waterford from 1700 to the 1970s. Amongst the many items of national and international significance displayed at the museum is the only surviving Bonaparte 'mourning cross', which was one of 12 produced upon Napoleon Bonaparte’s death in 1821. The museum also holds the Penrose decanter, the oldest surviving piece of Waterford Crystal, which dates back to 1789. A fantastic collection of Chinese Armorial Porcelain is on display in the dining room of the palace. The Bishop’s Palace offers a unique experience for visitors. The building contains a wealth of fascinating artefacts, period furniture, beautiful fireplaces and a collection of rare and important paintings. An entire floor of the building is dedicated to historic stories specific to Waterford such as Ballybricken’s pig markets, Waterford’s Home Rule story, the First World War in Waterford, the War of Independence in Waterford, childhood and household living in Waterford and the story of Glass making in the Crystal city. We have now included the new 4D Masterpieces in Glass, the story of glass making by the Penrose family from the 1700s to modern day, using 4D technology to tell the story, which a lot of parents tell us that the children really loved this part of the tour. I'm surprised that you would not recommend visiting, you didn't mention whether you availed of the guided tour, which is included in the cost of entry or whether you opted to self-guide using our App. I will certainly pass on your kind comments to the team. Thank you for coming to visit and taking the time to give us your feedback. Go raibh míle maith agat! #4D #Georgian #History #Waterford #LoveWaterford #KeepDiscovering #DiscoverIreland
