I am a great admirer of Jane Austen's books but I knew little about her life. This tour taught me a lot about her and I could see where she got inspiration. I have always liked English countryside and this area is really charming! Preserved almost the same as 200 years ago. Phil, who is the sole person doing this... More

My wife is a huge Austen fan and I ... well, I watched two of the movies. We both had a splendid time on a deep dive into the world of Jane Austen. It's the perfect day trip away from the Tower and Westminster and St. Paul's, which are all wonderful but half the world is there. Your host, Phil,... More

This was a wonderful day of exploring Austen country with very knowledgeable tour guide, Phil Howe. Pricey but well worth it, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to dig more deeply into the Austen experience.

Enjoyed personal touring with Phil to see where Jane Austin lived and appreciate the finer points of the nearby countryside and villages. Phil provided a wealth of interesting information about Jane Austin as well as contemporary local color. Would like to return for further personal touring of this type. Enriched my fondness for Jane Austin and English countryside. Enjoyed a... More

This tour was amazing and so worth the time! Phil does a wonderful job of showing you not only the life of Jane Austen, but giving you a good feel of the time she lived in. Since it is so personal he is able to take you places that a big tour group would not be able to and frankly,... More

The personally guided Jane Austen tour provided by Phil Howe was the BEST tour I have ever taken! I highly recommend it! If you have done nothing more than read one of Jane Austen's novels or seen one of her movies, you will return from Phil's tour as an aspiring "Janeite". Phil is an extraordinary historian, not only of Jane... More

Phil took me to see the houses of Jane Austen's neighbors, the site where she was born and grew up (the most magical moment for me even if all that one sees is a field!), her house in Chawton (now a museum) and the rectory and cemetery where her mother and sister are buried in one of the estates her... The site of Jane Austen's birthplace is a bit special and it's quite moving to imagine life in the old rectory. I will pass on your comments to Pete and Fran and staff at the Fur & Feathers. Phil More

My daughter and I spent the day with Phil visiting significant places in Jane's life. This was undoubtedly the most fascinating, informative and enjoyable tour we have ever taken! Phil knows so much of her personal and literary history that we learned so much and were so enthralled with the stories and places we visited. This was undoubtedly the best... More

Phil Howe has designed, and guides, this tour of Jane Austen's "Neighbourhood" with wonderful insight into her life and, importantly, the times that provide the context. He is knowledgeable and thoughtful and enjoys sharing the highlights of the district and the Jane Austen story with people. This tour works whether you are a true Austen aficionado, or just a run-of-the... More

I went to Bath last year, and while that is a great day out in Georgian England, anyone who wants to understand Austen really needs to get to the countryside and villages in Hampshire where she grew up and wrote her novels. For me the best thing was how unspoilt it all was by tourist trappings, and how Phil was... More
