About
Hidcote is a world-famous Arts and Crafts-inspired garden nestled in a North Cotswold hamlet, created by passionate plantsman and talented designer, Major Lawrence Johnston. Covering an area of 10.5 acres the garden takes visitors on a journey through intimate formal areas revealing a different atmosphere or new vista at every turn. Smaller, more formal garden ‘rooms’ near the house, give way to more natural areas that blend in with the surrounding countryside further away. There is a central axis running from East to West and another North to South, forming corridors off which the garden rooms can be found, each one with its own character and personality. Using Hidcote as a ‘blank canvas’, Lawrence Johnston designed the garden in phases from 1907 to 1938. He furnished borders with newly discovered plants and exotic rarities gathered during plant hunting expeditions from around the world.

We visited this before, about 10 years ago and decided to call in on the way home from the Cotswolds. It’s a different perspective from what we recalled, this time on a sunny late Autumn morning. Lots of garden rooms and long grassy avenues to see. A lot of the grass areas were roped off presumably because of previous rainfall, and we thought that a lot of the paved/tiled pathways were a little slippy in places (and we were properly shod). A few of the ground floor rooms in the house were open, which was different to last time, but there’s not much to see really. Had a cuppa and a lump of cake in the café, and visited the s/h bookshop, both usual standards. Quite a bit of parking available, we got there just after 11 (you need to book a timeslot currently) and parked the motorhome easily, though we suspected a lot of people park here and then maybe go walking elsewhere. Thought the price was about right, though we’re NT members and get in free. It’s worth seeing if you’re near, but maybe not worth travelling a long way to see just this.

Before we arrived I thought this was a manor house with gardens, but it is actually just gardens (a few rooms in the house are open to walk through). However the gardens were very impressive. So many individual sections each with their own personality. Highly recommended if you are in the Cotswolds.

A really wonderful garden, of some area and delight. And as with most NT attractions a good tea-room and second hand bookshop. Also some Kaffe Fassett quilts!

Beautifully designed walks and paths, several different aspects, tree lined walkway, formal planting, long vistas and access to the house. Really good information around the garden about its history, work they are undertaking and a helpful board at the entrance about other nearby attractions.

Beautiful little shop. Main tea room was closed, the outside barn tea room was open, and there was a pretty covered area to sit.

Paths in some places are paved and uneven.

The gardens are huge which will keep you busy walking around and has enough room for displays.
However, I gave it 2/5 because a garden should attract visitors and display exceptional arrangements of plants and colour of not only shrubs but flowers, even in autumn.
I was dissapointed as my garden at home displays more glorious pink aster flowers, and pink and orange crysanthamums, plus the beautiful nerine bowdeni at this time than what i saw here. The garden just looked overall neglected and tired.
Sorry Hidcote but you are charging an extortionate amount to get in in October for so little to look at, i thought i'd warn visitors.

Another spectacular national trust site! We’ve been to so many recently but this was gorgeous exploring all of the different areas of the gardens. We stayed for hours and my girls loved running around. I can’t wait to come back next year to see the garden at a different time of year and plan to bring my mum who loves gardens too. The staff were all lovely on arrival and I loved the shop too.

On a few days visiting the Cotswolds we popped into the NT place. Not been before. What a delight. We unfortunately didn't arrive till the end of the day so only managed an hour. Will most definitely go back for a full day, which it deserves. So much colour in the lovely cottage gardens. Brilliant

The whole place is good with much variety. Wear good walking shoes it's all outdoors. It laid out as a series of rooms, the maps essential to make sure you don't miss anywhere.

Another excellent National Trust location, Hidcote Manor has a huge garden area with lots of see. We visitied in May spent 2-3 hours wandering around the place.

There is even an old tennis court with some rackets that you can use for a quick game!

Beautiful gardens. This garden is one of my favourite national trusts.Plenty of ideas to try to incorporate in our own garden (though on a much smaller scale). Something eye catching around every corner. EVERY garden lover needs to visit here at once. We even saw a hummingbird moth.
