Lovely gardens with many 'garden rooms' all different
Oct 2021
Lovely gardens with many 'garden rooms' all different. Lovely plants but no plant names. It wasn't at its best in October but was still pretty.

Don't expect anything to eat! Garden is overpriced
Oct 2021
We arrived on Sunday at Hidcote after a long drive and planned to have lunch and a cream tea before a walk around the gardens. We were really disappointed to find that the cafe was closed. There was nothing on their website to tell us that the cafe would be closed in advance of our visit. We paid £15 each for a walk around gardens which were well past their best and all we could buy to eat were some crisps and a Kit-Kat! There is not even any indoor seating to have a cuppa if it's raining. It's fair enough that they have to close the cafe for renovations but not to buy-in any sandwiches or cakes for visitors to eat or let them know on the website is very poor customer service and spoiled our day out. We would not have visited Hidcote if we had known that the cafe was closed. It used to cost £8 each to visit the gardens when it was pre-booked due to Covid and the gardens looked much better then. There are some nice dog walks from the car park so take a picnic and go for a countryside walk instead.

fascinating

will have to go back as could not see everything in our two hour visit.
Hugely impressed- the young man sterilising every table as soon as anyone left it at the cafe- but those cast iron holey tables presented him a huge challenge.
The fact that you are recycling the plant based cups with three separate bin openings outside the cafe.
(Eng.i.h Heri.. ge need to learn from that). Also, that the bins are emptied so regularly- each time I went in two hours they were empty). All your staff are working so hard and are so friendly.

Wild garden
Sep 2021 • Couples
We visited on a beautiful sunny September afternoon, as we were near by.

We expected lovely manicured gardens, but in fact they are quite wild, of course being September a lot of flowers were coming to the end, but we felt that maybe the garden was not being cared for, not sure if this is due to covid and maybe a shortage of volunteers.

Glad we visited we had a picnic then spent about 40 mins walking through the narrow paths so all in all we were there for maybe just over the hour.

Fabulous garden!!
Sep 2021
Previous negative reviewers are being very uncharitable. We have visited several gardens in the UK this year and all have suffered from loss of staff and volunteers due to Covid. We found lots of colour in the garden and rather liked the slight sense of unkemptness in places. We last visited over 30 years ago and had forgotten what a magnificent achievement Hidcote is. Compared to our local star (Sissinghurst) Hidcote wins hands down. Despite the very large number of visitors the size and spread of the gardens made our visit feel very peaceful.

Very disappointing
Sep 2021 • Friends
I only live locally and this was somewhere I always wanted to visit. I really wish I hadn't bothered! Very disappointing. The borders were unkempt and dishevelled, dead heading and weeding required in abundance. There was even a dead rat in the middle of one of the main paths!! Such a shame as I could see the garden has the potential to be stunning :(

This Giant is having a very long sleep!

Can't understand how Hidcote has gone drastically downhill...poor maintenance and plant care, very weedy with areas of well established perennial weed. The old garden is an unrecognisable jumble and the Red Borders-even though they have had some care are also miles away from how they used to be(Agapanthus etc?).The area of the garden once known as Westonbirt is one of many areas in the garden where plants have either perished or cleared with no replanting.
The pandemic is not entirely to blame as it was in this state on my last visit two years ago!

Needs a good inspection
Sep 2021
We have been to Hidcote very many times over the years. Standard of cutting back of perennials appropriate to time of year was poor, dead heading to generate more bloom not being done. The standard of pruning for shape, health and production of flowers and fruit very average. Most of the plants are not named - this is a plantsman's garden! The Red border looked very well which it should for this time of year. Other plants flowering at this time of year in other parts of the garden looked tired
Yes this time of year can be short of bloom - it just seemed a little sad - or maybe it's just me!

We did wait in the queue for the cafe. The staff were charming but the sandwiches were dry, the coffee effectively tasteless and the lemon drizzle brought even less to the party! The crisps were good!

Totally underwhelmed
Sep 2021 • Friends
Hidcote has been on my list of must visit gardens for a while but I was totally underwhelmed by my trip. Perhaps early September was not the best time to go as most things were past their best, although I have been to lots of other gardens at this time of year which have looked good, and overall the gardens just looked unkempt. I guess I should have been forwarned by the sign at the entrance that said things were not looking as good as normal due to COVID. I’m also assuming that COVID would be the reason/excuse why one of the cafes was closed meaning that there was a long queue for the open one which we didn’t join, deciding to head to a nearby small garden centre for lunch instead. I wouldn’t have minded quite so much if they weren’t charging an entry fee of £15 for below par gardens and closed cafes. The best part of the garden is that by the lily pond but the rest wasn’t worth the journey. Kiftsgate next door was much better.

Beautiful gardens

Beautifully full and bountiful gardens full of hidden gems surrounded by expansive views. A peaceful meander to fill a good few hours.
