Vezelay, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Vezelay is a remarkable world heritage site, one of humanity’s gems, ranked n° 2 by National Geographic Traveller. A major pilgrimage centre in the Middle Ages, at the summit of “the eternal hill” the 12th century Basilica with its exceptional architecture of light is a masterpiece of Romanesque art.

The Visitor Centre

To enable the “stones to speak” and so that we can understand the symbolism written into the sculpture, the guides at the Visitor Centre give the keys to the know-how and the spirit that animated the monk-builders opening up a whole world of light, beauty and harmony so inspirational and instructive for us today. Propositions include the scenographic visit to prepare the visit in the Basilica, walking on the Santiago Pilgrim path, drawing in the Basilica, the sculpture workshop...

My father and I had the pleasure of engaging Christopher as our guide to the Basilica in Vezelay. What an incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and exciting tour guide! Although we'd already been in the town and visited the basilica several times, Christopher's tour helped us to gain new insight to its architectural and, especially, the solar significance. His tour was one... More

While we didn't need lots of information, we did need to know something important...the location of restrooms. While the options weren't plentiful of upscale, we did appreciate the information and the map.

The visitor center is a great accompaniment to the basilica, providing insight into the symbolism of the basilica, the sculptors of the 12th century, and the impact and influence of the basilica on religious life.

Dear Janeen, thank-you for your review of the Visitor Centre. A nice surprise to discover it this morning. You were lucky to be in Vezelay before it got as cold as at present (very exceptional). Remind me : was it you who would like a copy of the film ? I hope we will enjoy seeing you here again, and... More

An inspiring presentation of the Basilica, superbly delivered. Truly a must for those who wish to enter the church with the level of understanding needed to truly appreciate its meaning. I absolutely recommend it!

La maison du Visiteur is a must to really appreciate and undertand the intrinsic grandeur of Vezelay. The state-of-the-art visit is a symphony of insight on Vezélay's basilica - one of the most beautiful in the world where stone dialogues with light in Christian, cosmic serenity. Brilliantly and yet so simply exposed by the knowlegable guide - I came out... More

Our family spent several days in Vezelay in July 2014 and our visit to "La Maison du Visiteur" was one of the highlights of our stay. Located a short distance down the hill from the Basilica, this "visitor's house" is a very special place. Expect to spend about an hour or so here before you make your visit to the... More
