One of a kind

A jewel of romanesque architecture of the distinctive Bourgogne style. One of few remaining romanesque churches with a nartex.

The Basilique Sainte Marie-Madeleine, a fine example of Romanesque architecture, is well worth a visit- or two or three or four. It's not only interesting as an example of rapid changes in architectural styles that occurred over night as the basilica was being completed, but also as a Stone Henge-like human structure oriented to take in sunlight in very particular... What was so special about this abbey was to see and hear the service attended by so many actual monks and nuns. It was beautiful.

Recommended by our canal guide book - we were so pleased we came to Vezelay and especially the Cathedral. It has a quiet magnificence about it. Loved the surrounding town and the winding medieval streets, but the Basillica was the star of the day a must do :)

I didn't care much for the basilica, it seemed more austere in the Lutheran style than one usually sees in Catholic churches, but it was interesting enough and attractive from the outside. The village, however, is built on a hill and looms over the countryside presenting a romantic pose on the approaching drives. The village is filled with art shops,... More

Vezelay is an interesting small town with many eateries and good hotels. We visited for the afternoon on a very hot day walking up the VERY steep hill to the basilica although we later spotted an electric bus transporting the less able persons up and down. Some interesting shops and cafes to look in to on the way up and... More

Vezelay has to be one of my favourite places in the world! I first visited it 30 years ago when it was impressive but empty and somehow unloved. Since then it has come alive with the help of a new monastic community. It is clean, cared for and is once again a spiritual centre. The interior is breathtaking. Definitely not... More

We visited Vezelay during our recent stay in nearby Arcy-sur-Cure. The 'town' is well worth a visit in itself and has several shops, cafes and restaurants. It involves a walk up through the main street (which is generally traffic free and at times is pedestrianised) which is a gentle hill to the top where the Basilica is situated. There are... More

It's a really old cathedral and run down in many ways. There are no bathrooms anywhere in site so beware. But it's a nice, primitive church that has a basic beauty. Suggest you go.

I didn't know what to expect but this Basilica had some very interesting architectural aspects in addition to being an incredibly important historical site. The double entrance is interesting as are the many sculptures around the doors. See the ancient paintings on the back of some of the columns and the little symbols on each block of stone - how...
