We visited in August of 2015 and it was a bit warm. Mostly we visited the Cathedral, took the small train ride, walked the town and visited shops, and ate at one of the excellent places immediately adjacent to the Cathedral. We enjoyed it enough that we had actually intended to return the following, but decided it was too hot.... More

I arrived in Chartres expecting to spend 3 days wandering about in amazement. Nothing was a highlight. This cathedral took about 15 minutes to view. I spent more time walking the perimeter. I spent 1 day in Chartres and really regretted the wasted time when I arrived in Avignon and found so much more to enjoy.

My favorite French Cathedral...ascend the 300 steps up the spiral staircase for a fantastic panoramic view of Chartres, take your time as its a steep, possible vertigo inducing trek...but worth it!! Downstairs, gaze at the beautiful stained glass, frescoes, sculpture and large pipe organ. The exterior is class French Gotjic architecture in its grandeur.

we decided to see the cathedral as we were so close to Chartres while we were visiting Paris, the town was very pretty and easy to park, right by the cathedral. It was an amazing experience, the architecture fabulous and the stained glass windows I have never seen such beauty. The restoration is well under way and people working hard... More

Take the plunge and climb the tower. There is a small charge, but it is worth it! There are two things they don't tell you; one is the ascension is done on 300 steps in a spiral that can affect you if you experience vertigo. There are also places where you can step aside and have small rests, which is... More

This is a very historic cathedral. Both inside and outside are very beautiful. In the evening there are light shows on the side resembling stained glass windows. On the front the show has changing scenes with shadows of people climbing up and doing acrobatics similar to circe de sole. One can sit at a nearby outdoor restaurant and see it... More

Lets be honest, if it wasn't for this Cathedral nobody would ever visit Chartres. So if you've made the effort to visit this magnificent Cathedral then you would be remiss to pass on the opportunity to drag your bones to the top of the tower. The view is, well its a view of Chartres, a town that looks as interesting... More

Wonderful, and it was made all the more meaningful with the tour to tell us what we were seeing! How to read stained glass windows, architecture from 1000 years ago, a million things that made me want to learn more.

The climb is not especially demanding, but the spiral staircase is narrow, so passing on the stairs isn't particularly easy. We were lucky, because we went on a quiet day. The views from the top of the old town are excellent and there is, of course, the chance to get up close and personal with the cathedral architecture itself. Probably... More

Well worth the climb...although not for the faint of heart. It is a bit high up. Loved it myself. You get fantastic views of the city and of the rest of the cathedral itself.
