I was delighted to find this area of Chartres preserved. I had such fond memories of the historic sites and had been disappointed in the extent of commercialization in central Chartres in the last 30 to 40 years.

It is worth walking around and having a look at the rest of the town. There are some very narrow streets that make you feel in the year 1800 or so (I think). You can follow a nice route that will bring you via a...More

The old merchant shops, three story homes build with timber, cannels, water wheels and parks. Good walking paths for that after breakfast or dinner stroll.

This whole area is so well preserved with out just being a relic. The area is well occupied by workplaces and restaurants. Beautiful area which is vibrant.

We stopped just to see the cathedral as we were passing on our way to the port. We liked Chartres so much we think we will come back for a few days!

We took a bike ride along a pebbled pathway from nearby campsite to Chartres old town. Pathway was a couple of miles and ideal for buggys/wheelchairs etc. The old town is beautiful and well worth a walk/ride around.

Chartres is a lovely place but don't just stay round the cathedral - go down to the banks of the river Eure and follow the little lanes beside the river and enjoy the views of the numerous picturesque little bridges

After dinner in the Cathedral area we decided to take a walk and found ourselves delighted at every turn, beautiful old houses, dilapidated old ruins, preserved old houses and some renovated old houses, all with their own charm. The river, a restful place to stand...More

It's probably important to note that we are photographers and thus our preferences are a bit different from the average vacationer. I'm also 70 and was beginning to get a bit tired of all the stairs, but it is worth it. We visited Chartres two...More

The Cathedral is about a 15-20 minute walk. With the winding streets make sure you have a good map. Also you will soon see the spires of the Cathedral and can follow that too. The historic preservation area is past the... More
