Interesting exhibit particularly the history of the rise of Hitler and Resistance. Views and walks on and about the fortifications. Zoo was rather dismal, however there were good views of the Tigers. Good place to get your 10,000 steps in.

This is a very impressive fortress. It is worth watching the video explaining the architecture and history. It is a very steep climb, so for the elderly it is a tough visit (unless there's accommodations I am not aware of). My father is 83 and...More

If you're visiting Besançon you must go to the citadelle. It has something for everyone considering it has a zoo, aquarium (small), WWII and resistance museum, local heritage museum, amazing views and amazing architecture. The place is good for kids. The zoo and fish aquarium is best in it, should have more workers and any cafe or restaurant inside !

The structure itself is amazing and the history interesting. However, the overall experience was disappointing for two reasons. First, instead of seeing on display what life was like during any of the early time periods, the buildings now house several museums, an aquarium, insectarium, noctarium,...More

We gave really appreciated our visit to the Citadel. The history of its building by Vauban. Also the Museum of Resistance and Deportation which is very well documented. The site is gorgeous and the views are great when walking on the walls.

La Citadelle proved a fascinating day out, with wonderful views of Besancon and its surroundings, and a variety of museums and exhibits within its walls. Adult entry is €10.60 which we thought was excellent value. The Museum of the Resistance and Deportation was very moving...More

Three hours was a bit tight for this site that has so much to offer. Don't miss the video presentation in the church (get the audio tour in your language) - it really is 2000 years of history in 15 mins. The zoo is actually...More
