Neighbourhood: Ile de la Cité / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

Quasimodo, where are you?

I was lucky enough to visit it before that infamous fire, and I remember it as one of the most iconic places I visited in my life. As a big literature and Disney geek, it was like living in “Nôtre-Dame de Paris”. I will never forget the magnificent and colourful stained glass windows…

Historic but still undergoing repairs.

Was here after the fire in 2019 and looks a little better in 2021. It is still a beautiful cathedral but unfortunately it’s taking a loooooong time to repair it. Scaffolding still surrounds most of the side along the Seine. Cannot get too close due to all the construction.

Rebirth Under Way
Jul 2021
Currently under construction. All of our hearts broke with the tragic huge fire, but we have hope that the cathedral will be back. The plan is to restore in the 19th Century design, and at this time is is under construction. Lots of work around. Heartening to come and witness the rebirth.

Breathtaking architecture as always. I have visited the cathedral before the fire and currently after it. It is really sad to get to see how the fire impacted it you cannot go inside anymore and all you can see is the outside of it now. Still beautiful and worth looking into it from the outside

Amazing Landmark

Amazing and beautiful cathedral. A shame it was burned down. Currently under construction and renovation hence no access. Exterior is boarded up and multiple cranes around the structure.

Still Glorious
Oct 2020
We have been to Notre-Dame twice, once before the fire and once right after. Luckily the first time we were there we could go in and marvel at all its beauty. The architecture is so freaking neat!! Yes it was closed our 2nd time visiting, but from some vantage points you couldn't even tell there was a fire. The saddest part was the missing stained glass windows that were removed to restore after the fire. I remember those being so glorious.

We hadn't been able to visit it because it is under construction, but each friend we spoke to about Paris advised us to come for a walk in this pretty district.

Closed but we enjoyed

It's not just famous for being iconic landmark of Paris but the Disney film as well. Unfortunately part of the church are burned down and inside are very damaged at this moment. The pictures were taken before the incident and definitely love the glasswork and priests who are ready to explain the artifacts and artwork within this church.
