A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the

end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

The exit to the catacombs said enough about the size of the place, it really was astonishing! 6 MILLION people down there. Yes you dont see them all but i wouldnt b e surprised if during your walk you see over half a million! Please do book online as we queued for 2 and a half hours and were there... More

I felt really silly after our visit, After the longest queue ever, rude staff on entry and looking at an images of skulls that was pretty much the same throughout the exhibition I have no idea why we went (actually my daughter wanted to go). There was lots of written information about the geology of the tunnels but what there... More

Visit Rome better organized and includes a guided tour for a fair price. Expected a lot, but got massively disappointed

This was our second time to Paris and this was high on our list of things to do, again! Our son was seven the first time and ten on this last visit and he also thought it was very cool and interesting.

Great to visit if you've never seen such a place before. There's a 90 minute lineup, web pages suggest it might be less if you go before opening hours. Lineup is due to a lot of people getting in due to fast track, no idea how to get fast track tickets. When I finally was first in line, at 5-10... More

We walked by the Catacombs a couple of times during our stay before deciding to do a tour - and no matter the time of day - the line was always wrapped around the block! It was quite a bit more to pay for a guided tour, but it was definitely worth it. We booked one through the app "Viator"... More

If you're in Paris for a few days, it's worth checking these out. Interesting history behind them, but it is quite boring after a while. Not really something you could do twice

Very cool and exciting in a creepy way. The arrangements of many of the bones was creative. You realize how crowded Paris was.

Do yourself a favour and skip the line on this one. It's the only one I did. If the line is big, do it on the line on your phone and go straight to the front! Great history, confronting images, authentic and get ready to do plenty of stairs. 80 down and 83 back. Phew. A must do if you... More

I think that this place will appeal to some - but not so much to others. The undeniable facts are that the queues are very, very long. I can quite believe that, at busy times, you might have to wait hours to get in. Pre-booking online gets you in straightaway - although the "quick entry" is not obvious. Go to... More

Staying in Montparnasse

Neighbourhood Profile
Montparnasse
The namesake tower of Montparnasse dominates over the landscape but the fun part is the throbbing life that goes on below it. Bright lights, busy cinemas, brasseries and diners encompass hidden museums and parks to entertain the masses. Long avenues lead away from the tower to take you to unsuspecting places and historical monuments and treasures. In between lie adorable ivy-covered houses with beams and small gardens to match. Just a short metro ride away from the centre of Paris this neighbourhood has something for every hour of the day.
