My wife and I have never climbed as many steps as we did in two days visiting four of the Cathar Castles. But it was always well worth it. Cost to enter is reasonable at around Euro 6 to 8 per adult per castle. There...More

Great few hours spent through the castle. Great for, kids and families. There are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants to keep everyone occupied. Highly recommend a few hours here.

Rows of stone towers surrounded the castle. Try to see them after dusk when the lights are on. This is the only shot you need.

It was very heavily geared towards tourism, but well worth the trip! The restaurants were excellent. The feel of history was everywhere.

We really enjoyed walking around the old medieval fortress at Carcassonne. It has many charming shops and eateries but was a little too commercialised for our liking. It does look good from a distance though.

The walk up from the new city is daunting - try parking higher up ! (Do-able in winter) the entrance fee starting at 8.50€ is totally worth it – the history, the architecture, the stone masons work, the church - stained glass is amazing --...More

To visit the Cathar castles is quite a tour of the Languedoc. If you are into history, it's a must. You can start, like we did, by the Mediterranean coast and then meander through the valleys of what used to be border country between France...More

Simply a stunning example of a castle set in the centre of a medieval town, i was given to understand that it has been the location for a number of movies, so in many respects it speaks volumes. Walking the walls was excellent and we...More

Yes you can as castle is very close to town centre but to enjoy your experience there is a colourful street train which will take you up as it up a steep hill. you can even spend a whole day perusing the shops within (free... More
I was just going to visit Carcassonne, but it looks like there's so much more. Is there a recommended route to visit the Cathar Castles and how many would you recommend. I could spend all week just visiting these castles, but wonder if it gets old after the first 3-4? Is this best done by car. Where would you start and rent a car from? Thanks for the help.

I took my own car on the Ferry from Dover-Calais and drove down. Assume you're flying in from USA so presumably into Paris CDG. I'd consider taking the TGV train to maybe Avignon, hire a car there and drive down past... More
Could someone recommend me a guided tour from Carcassonne to any of the nearby cathar castles in June? I found just one available only in July and August and it would be a shame getting to Le Pays Cathare and not be able to visit at least one castle...
