If you do one hike in France, make it this one

Tunnels, teetering stairs, stunning gorge views, it's got it all. It's a one-way hike that takes most of the day, but if you are in shoulder season as we were, then the shuttles aren't running and you can't get back to your car. No matter, it's still (very) worthwhile to go half way along and then backtrack. You won't get... More

So, first of all there are different levels of difficulty for hikes in France: - Very easy (short hike, less than one hour) - Easy (hike less than too hours, no particular difficulty) - Medium (between 3 and 4 hours, and/or some difficulties) - Difficult (over 4 hours, and/or some difficulties) The Sentier Blanc Martel is listed as a difficult... We parked at Point Sublime and got the bus to Chalet Maline on a packed bus. We decided to get down to the gorge quickly to avoid any crowds and found the path well marked and well trodden. There are signs saying take lots of water and its dangerous etc but there are much harder walks in the Verdon and... More

I have made this way with a friend's and is and excellent experience. Is easy but with continuous up and down. Be careful and take enough water to drink. We didn't in for our luck a fireman of the park gave us a bottle. Thank you very much

It was a somewhat mixed bag to assess the difficulty of this trail based on the tripadvisor reviews: some said it was a piece of cake - others were less condescending. One thing is certain: for those who are not in a very good physical shape (like we were) it is a serious challenge. First of all the total vertical... More

we parked at coloire samson and hiked to breche imbert and back so as not to have to shuttle cars. the scenery at the start is spectacular - the tunnels are really different to what you expect on a walk - take a torch as a phone isn't really quite enough light. and there are great views of the gorge.... This is a very nice walk with a lot of diversity, tunnels, stairs, walking by a river and on a side of the mountain, so you see a lot of things. I was a little reluctant to do it, since I read that for some areas (the stairs) you need a head for heights, which i dont really have, and... More

We walked the Sentier Martel from Chalet de la Maline to Point Sublime, the easier direction with an overall loss of altitude and with the "steel staircase" on Brèche Imbert tackled as a descent. While the walking and route-finding are straightforward, the scenery is spectacular and make this an outstanding route. The walk can be completed comfortably in 7 hours... More

Walked the Sentier Martel in late August. The guide books suggested a challenging walk lasting 6 to 7 hours. I completed it in under 3 hours (but I was on my own and not hanging about). Most of the walk is a straightforward path with no technical challenge or route finding problems. There are a few places where care is... More
