Built under Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD, the Roman Theatre of Orange experienced a real rebirth in 2003, transporting visitors back to Imperial Rome. The new tour and the free audioguide in seven languages tell visitors about the shows and social life in the Provencal city during Roman times. In the new projection room, the film, with computer-generated images and reconstructions of shows, retraces the history of the Roman Theatre of Orange.

Fascinating Attraction

It was very interesting to learn that there is a roman theater in Orange. We had a great view from the park above it and a wonderful guide.

We scheduled our visit so as to be able to attend a performance of the Verdi Requiem in the Theatre. Stunningly memorable. I would return for another concert without hesitation. (My wife and kids were less keen on Verdi than I was, but the Theatre made the same kind of unforgettable impression on them as well.)

If you like visiting Roman ruins, then the Orange Theatre is a must-see. It is the only surviving theatre with a back wall in Europe. I have visited the other 2 remaining theatres with back walls in Turkey and Syria. They are (were) so much more impressive, but with the current political situation, you might consider the Orange Theatre as... More

Orange was not part of our original plan to visit. However while we planned to go to Avignon, this place Orange was nearby and quiet affordable and hence we chose to add to our list. After we reached the place, we found this place. When we read and looked at the place, wow I felt good that we came here.... More

Historical theater from the Roman epoch on French territory, it is considered one of the well conserved monuments in Europe. Amazingly, they keep showing operas and concerts with a live orchestra as it should happen in ancient times! Great acoustics. Better book your tickets in advance, they sell out quickly, especially in the summer season!

The Roman Theatre of Orange, centrally located in Orange in the heart of the lovely Rhône Valley, is the best preserved and most complete Roman theater we have seen to date (our audioguide said that it is the best preserved theater in Europe). It was built during the reign of Augustus in the 1st century AD. The façade (postcænum) is... More

This large well preserved Roman Theater was built towards the end of the 1st C. AD and is located in the center of Orange. The grand exterior façade features 17 arched doorways w/ 22 pilasters and is 103 m long, 37 m high and 1.8 m thick. The 3 story interior wall w/ a stage roof provides excellent acoustics and... We have visited many Roman sites, and the theatre in Orange is certainly the best one we have seen so far. As it was raining when we arrived, we had a look around the museum across the road, quite small, but worth a visit. We then returned to the theatre and watched the introductory film - again worthwhile. The audio... More

If you're in the area, it's a must visit. It's the most complete Roman back wall I've ever seen. However, be aware that scaffolding covers a large portion of it, which takes away from the magic. I found the audioguide to be cheesy, but take it with you, there are some fascinating nuggets of information. The included museum across the... More

This place is truly incredible. Friends and I visited and just stared in awe. Be sure to see the video in the little theatre just outside the main reception. Gives you a great history of the place and how it has evolved and has been used over the centuries. What a treasure this place is.
